Do you follow too many people?

Do you want to organise your Mastodon home timeline into several themed mini-timelines that are easier to navigate?

You can do this on Mastodon using the "Lists" feature, and here's a guide all about it:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-advanced-tips/#UsingListsOnMastodon

You can use Lists on third party apps like Tusky for Android or Metatext for iPhone/iPad, or on your server's website.

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@feditips ooh might be useful thank you

@feditips Highly recommend doing this - although I've found mentally adding '... and cats' to all the lists I made would be accurate, for lists originally named Archaeology, Art, Space, Tech or whatever.

(So many cats! It's great.)

@feditips Thanks, that's the easy part. 😀

But what does the "Show replies to" setting do?

Is it another filter to further limit the toot's visibility?

@ls @feditips as far as I can tell, it tells Mastodon whether to show replies from people in the list!

So if you're following Person 1 and Person 2, and you only put Person 1 in the list, and then Person 1 replies to one of Person 2's posts, that reply would show up in the list if you have the list set to "Any followed user", but NOT if you have it set to "Members of the list".

I hope that explains it?

@feditips

What I used to do on twitter was create lists of accounts I don't follow i.e. things like news and local traffic reports and then my main feed was uncluttered but I could open a pane in tweetdeck or in the app for just that stream of posts.

Is that possible in mastodon?

@benleis @feditips I do this on Twitter (lists with accounts I don't follow), wish could do the same here...

@feditips I used lists extensively on the bird site. Haven't gotten around to setting them up here, but I will.

Is there any equivalent on Mastodon to the TweetDeck interface? Because that worked GREAT in conjunction with lists. It was my default way of using the bird site.

@probablyjohnfunk @feditips "Enable advanced web interface" in the settings is what you are looking for! It's not as functional but close enough

@probablyjohnfunk @feditips

Closest I’ve seen is using the web version and under Account Settings, you can turn on Enable Advanced Web Interface. Then if on a computer, you can have a multitude of different Mastodon items open at once. So you could have a column dedicated to a list, another a hashtag, etc.

hey @probablyjohnfunk if you go to 'preferences' there should be a checkbox called 'advanced web interface'. hit that and it should give you something a little more like tweet deck I believe.
@probablyjohnfunk @feditips
There's an Advanced User Interface toggle in the Mastodon Web preferences. It's one of the first settings you see in the list 👍

@feditips these apps really need a link on either posts or profiles that says, "Add to List"

The leaps and hurdles in the stated List Howto are hilarious. Yes, it can be done, but ain't nobody got time for this 😏

@feditips this is nice but I like Pinterest boards better. They are like inverted lists, i.e. you subscribe to lists created and maintained by the authors. This allows you to follow one person who posts about multiple topics (as we all do) and see the posts filtered accordingly.
@kumarvibe @feditips
This ☝!
I also think post authors should be enabled to sort/tag their content into topics. Then instead of following people, you can follow topics of people.
These could even still be sorted into your own lists.
@julienkaspart @feditips yep. It’s surprising to me that only Pinterest ever explored this model. Google Plus got close with “circles” but those ended up more like lists.

@feditips is this part right ?

"On some people’s Mastodon profiles you’ll see a padlock icon 🔒 next to their names. This means they have follow requests switched on for their account,"

"switched on" ??? Don't you mean off?

@Mrfunkedude @feditips I think "follow requests" means you can apply to follow but they have to choose whether to accept it.
@feditips yeah but the feature is barely functional in v3. I have to type in every single user to add, instead of just listing them all and letting me click a plus symbol. it'll get there. just saying that it's not very useful yet.
@feditips oh great, I was just wondering what lists were for, they're pretty new aren't they?
@feditips I’ve add https:// but the link still not clickable, why?

@feditips Oh, thats great!

Can I only see the toots of someone on a list that I create? Can I restrict the post to show there only?

Reason I am asking that is I wanted to follow @uanews for Ukraine war news, but they post every 3 mins or so, so I do not want them on my regular timeline or I don't see anything else than that.

Does that exist?

@feditips

This method only works some of the time.

If the person is not on your server it does not seem to know that you're following them, and therefore you cannot add them to a list.

In this case, editing the list directly is the only solution I've found.

@feditips Thanks. Shared and bookmarked
@feditips not supported in the official mobile app though, I think?
@feditips Why am I seeing your posts in my notifications? Confused about this.
@feditips a fantastic feature but the interface could be improved !

@feditips I've already created seven Lists, only to find that the right-hand column only lists four of them. I have to click on the Lists icon to see all of them again. Any chance that section might be expanded?

I tried messing around with the Advanced view, but I don't feel the need to see more than one feed at a time.

Thanks!

@feditips Thanks! I was just looking for info about how to do exactly this!
