My #INTRODUCTION: I'm a TV writer and showrunner based in LA who was born and raised in Tulsa. Spent all the money I earned mowing lawns to see STAR WARS eleven times and decided I wanted to write for a living, but wasn't sure how. Then Coppola directed THE OUTSIDERS in my home town. Got a bit part and a single line ("Whatchoogonnadoaboutit?") and realized if I really wanted to join the circus-- I had to follow the circus out west. Luckily got into USC Film School (where I'm now a professor)...
Paid for school as the creative director for an LA ad agency. Wrote trailers and taglines for movies (HOME ALONE: The Family Comedy Without the Family. THE MASK: From Zero to Hero). Wrote and sold a few screenplays and pilots of my own that nobody saw, until I suddenly got my first movie and series produced in the same year: I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and MERCY POINT. Worked on all kinds of other shows you've probably seen. Mostly proud of being a father of three amazing people...
I go to lots of concerts and love all kinds of music (except death metal-- I'm just not that angry). Passionate devotee of terrestrial radio and a former DJ myself at KRMG in Tulsa. Big geek over history-- especially World's Fairs and International Expositions (yes, they're still happening and yes, you should totally go to one). And madly in love with the great Golden State of California where I fully intend to spend the rest of my hopefully long and never boring life. Nice to meet you!

@treycallaway Nice to meet you, Trey.

Did you now that the infamous Clarence Darrow argued in court to open the gates of the 1899 World’s Fair in Buffalo on Sundays, because of Sabbath bylaws? It was on behalf of the American Secular Union.

They eventually obliged to let people in on Sundays, but wouldn’t let any exhibits or the midway open. (Sad trombone)

@tojo Hey Thomas! You're close! It was the 1901 Pan-Am Exposition in Buffalo which Darrow argued about in court. And that was the same Expo where President McKinley was tragically assassinated. (See, I told you this was my Geek!). 😂
@treycallaway That’s right. I was…testing your bona fides, Professor; yeah, that’s it.
@treycallaway Welcome! I spent a year in Norman. Nice people and best food of any university I've visited.
@danielleellen Thanks! I went to OU for one year before getting into USC and would concur on both fronts!
@treycallaway As a New Englander I'll never forget my first chicken fried steak. First confusion, then delight. I'm just glad my arteries were 18.
@treycallaway I’m gonna need a whole lot more info about this Outsiders situation…

@treycallaway
Ahhhh! Where do I start? I’m a huge fan of the movie. Loved it as a kid and started collecting autographs from the cast a few years ago. :)

Do you have a screenshot of your scene? Did you meet any of the leads? See anything crazy?

Thanks for entertaining my nerdy inquiries!

@Daynadirects Haha. Well, here's a screenshot of my scene-- I'm the uncredited SOC IN CONCESSION STAND. It was incorrectly credited to a guy named Hugh Walkinshaw-- but it's actually 16-year-old ME wearing that green and white letter jacket, getting into a shoving match with a Greaser while C Thomas Howell and Diane Lane are waiting in line for refreshments.
@Daynadirects And here I am-- many years later-- with OUTSIDERS author SE Hinton at the grand opening of The Outsiders House Museum-- a holy grail collection of memorabilia devoted to the novel and film and located inside the actual shooting location featured in the movie, founded by my amazing friend, House of Pain member Danny Boy O'Connor.
@Daynadirects Me with Tommy Howell and Danny O'Connor.
@Daynadirects My original wardrobe is on display in the museum. And I signed the Wall of Fame.

@treycallaway
@treycallaway I’m, wow! This is such fun. Thanks for sharing it. I had a great chat with C. Thomas Howell and Ralph Macchio about the same time my daughter got old enough to appreciate it and it reminded me how much I love the film!

I haven’t made it to the museum yet but it’s on my list. :) Now I know to look for your jacket.

@treycallaway
Having lived in Boston in the early 90s, I definitely know that face!
@treycallaway I too saw Star Wars at the movies a dozen times. It blew my mind. I was nine or ten, so I needed cash & a ride. No movie rentals in 1977. You had to go to the theaters.
@treycallaway Happy to be tootin' with you, Trey! Cheers!
