The biggest culture shock to me since I moved to the Fediverse is the #Introduction ritual. Who you are, where you from, what you do for a living, languages you speak, your interests, your political views, your gender and your orientations, everything about you.

All of this left me with a feeling of envy. Living with so much trust and little fear must be nice.

Growing up in a place where revealing these at BEST means trouble. I cannot do this.

An unstated rule on the #Fedi is that if your account does not feature a profile which says something about you and your interests (or the account it it’s a bot) and doesn’t have at least one post with an #Introduction then your requests to #Follow are likely to be denied.

It is a rule I apply as well. Maybe next time?

I have been enjoying the fediverse from raphus.social, but wanted a more local instance. I live in northern #NJ outside of #NYC. I am a physics PhD working at a scientific instrument company. Over the past few years I have dived into #unschooling , #nvc , #permaculture , #botany , #freeSoftware , #foss , #sociocracy. Recently, I am interested in #limitsToGrowth , #collapse , and #degrowth. I'm married, and a dad of two boys 8 and 5 years old.

What mental health means to me.

Mental health became a major topic in my life when I was seven years old and the police put my dad in a psych ward because they found him in a trainyard and thought he was about to off himself

And even then, my understanding of the topic was limited. My dad definitely went through a long series of mental health crises, but he was blatantly struggling to function

And I find it rare that media captures how therapy is supposed to function
