Over 1000 researchers are now on #Mastodon and have their handle on #Wikidata!

@nemobis

The relation between #Wikidata and #Wikipedia still seems to be very much open to seeing what can or should evolve.

The tricky question is whether or not researchers are [[WP:NOTABLE]], with the risk of [[WP:ABOUTME]].

From an epistemological point of view, given that the most solid sources for Wikipedia are research articles, it would seem that it would be good to know about the researchers who obtain that knowledge. Rather than just film stars, singers, reality show celebrities...

Now extracting some more usernames from the #ORCID #XML dump. I did it in #XSLT, because why not.

Soon in a #Wikidata item near you (hopefully)!

I imported these to #Wikidata, we're now over 1200 researchers with a #Mastodon handle.

I wonder whether it's ok to scrape e.g. https://fediscience.org/explore and feed the profiles it into #OpenRefine for reconciliation with ORCIDs and Q-ids. Disambiguation might be hard.

@nemobis intuitively the overlap is probably small (and yeah, reconciliation of people in #Wikidata sucks with my endpoint - maybe the Ontotext one does a better job?)
@nemobis hm, I have my ORCID on profile, but I'm not in wikidata. Where do they get their data from?
Wikidata:WikiProject Source MetaData - Wikidata

@nemobis what does one need to do to get added to wikidata? Don鈥檛 see a way on my iPhone.

@ChemBob Mobile editing for Wikidata is probably an excruciating experience, I wouldn't recommend it.

You should probably register first (just login with your Wikimedia/Wikipedia account if you have one), then see https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Items#Creating_a_new_item

Try a search first, there is probably at least some of your publications already.

Help:Items - Wikidata

@nemobis how does it identify researchers?
@Amandatron89 By their having an ORCID, which is a reasonably proxy. (Most people with an ORCID on Wikidata were imported because their papers were also imported.) You can also filter by profession.
@nemobis OK, just noticed I'm not on there and wondered
Errors in long-read assemblies can critically affect protein prediction

@nemobis cool thanks, will take a look at that later 馃榿
@nemobis is there a way to add a twitter handle to that? I'm looking at it now and can't see a way to edit identifiers. Not that I expect Twitter to be around by the end of the year 馃槄
@Amandatron89 Yes, look for the "add statement" button, type "twitter" in the property name.

@nemobis possibly not seeing it because I'm on my phone 馃 thanks I'll work it out next time I'm on the computer
@nemobis I hesitate to add my own handle to my QID but maybe I should? Or perhaps someone can add this handle to Q107598000? That's me!
@nemobis Excuse my ignorance, but what does "having a handle on wikidata" mean?
@Depemig Thanks for asking, I realised later it was confusing. I mean a handle as in address, identifier. A statement for the Wikidata property called #P4033 "Mastodon address" https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P4033 . With URL vs. username vs. ID vs. other things it gets confusing.
Mastodon address

address on the Mastodon decentralized social network (the form is '[email protected]' without a leading '@')

@nemobis Thanks! I was actually also not aware of the wiki data list of researchers. Can you explain the use of this list? Thanks a lot!

@Depemig Does this page about #WikiCite help? https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite

Wikidata is (also) a database about millions of authors and papers.

@nemobis That helps a lot, thanks! A good framework it is.
