RoyGreenhilt@boogah I can think of a couple systems that have gone this route, not necessarily via takeover or merger.
The one that immediately comes to mind is the rise of Jenkins after the absolute dumpster fire that was Oracles handling of Hudson.

@boogah put a different way... the amount of folks who lost faith in MT due to an esoteric licensing change was insignificant versus the people who wanted to start a new blog and picked WP for non-licensing reasons, and it was well on this trajectory before the change
