I geek, therefore I am.

I am, in no particular order, a parent, a nerd, a maker, a musician, an explorer, a techie, a juggler, a camper, a hiker, a sailor, a movie nut, a pop culture encyclopedia, a cohouser, an SF fan, a drone pilot, a mechanic, a jeepster, a sysadmin, a retrocomputing geek, a programmer, a (former) SCCA driver, and a gamer.

Small update to https://mastodonstatus.com/

* Fixed mstdn.party monitor (had wrong URL)
* Removed mastodon.poppingboxes.org (perpetually down)

Also exploring a better platform that will allow full monitoring across all instances. I did ask UptimeRobot if they could extend their limits for us, no joy there (and going from 50 instances to 100 would triple opex :-/ )

Mastodon Status

You KNOW #Mastodon's got traction when you wake up Saturday morning at 6am, open your #home #timeline, and it's full of pithy, interesting remarks that you actually want to read...👏
Whenever I post digital security or privacy advice, there is always one reply boasting that they assume everything is being watched at all times and nothing is secure. Cool. Good for you. Do you want a fucking medal? Because in the meantime, I'm trying to give actionable advice to people in vulnerable situations trying to live their lives.

In retrospect the Lode Runner dude was actually a funeral director who became an OSHA inspector so he could cut out the middleman.

There's definitely a slam dunk horror story about workplace safety and capitalism in there somewhere.

What will be the "Why did it have to be..." critter in the new Indiana Jones movie?

Hey #pinball peeps.

I'm considering a virtual table. I love the bonk and bing and physicality of real machines, and I'll continue collecting them, but the once or twice I've used a digital table, I've been super impressed.

So what's the consensus? I could get a premade one with 360 games in it for about $5k. Which is how much a middling decent game costs nowadays.

Is it worth it? Will I be happy with the results? More importantly, should I just build my own?

How to warn someone not to hit their head:

1. Wait until they’ve hit their head
2. Say “ooh, careful”

In re the Cocaine Bear trailer:

C'mon people. "FREEBASED ON A TRUE STORY" was just sitting there on the table, waiting for you to snort it. Do I have to do EVERYTHING here?

@malwaretech Your article on mastodon has been circulating a lot in our circles. Well done! And welcome to the happy place :)

I Was Wrong About Mastodon – EscapingTech

I said that Mastodon moderation wouldn't scale, it does. The cultural differences will likely continue to maintain a friendlier atmosphere regardless of size.

Remember: if you get Wikipedia "pls give us money" begging, give to the Internet Archive instead.

The internet archive is perpetually underfunded, whereas Wikipedia has enough cash on hand to continue operating at twice its capacity for about 3 decades.

Editors strongly opposed the wording of the recent beg banner:
