Is there any reason to stick with Mastodon? Hardly anyone seems to interact. It is a strangely alienating experience.

@BrownsvilleG11 I think it might just take time. I'm not a frequent poster, but I've only been here a week or so and I am slowly connecting with like minded folk. e.g. your two hashtags #atheism and #history draw me in to replying to you.

I am a big fan of the more chilled atmosphere here though. Far less agro, abuse, outrage, spam and no ads, and I like that I am just part of a community here for what its worth rather than a product on the other site. Cheers 😀

@Scarp this is really heartening. Thank you. The other place is certainly getting sinister. I like the less aggro vibe here, that's true. I hope it grows and develops into a great place to interact.
@BrownsvilleG11 I hope so too. I stopped posting on the other place completely the last couple of years just to avoid the inevitable confrontation. These platforms help me have conversations with folk I would never normally meet and I feel way more comfortable doing that on Mastodon. Enjoy your arvo.
@BrownsvilleG11 I’ve had more interaction here in two days than in the other place in months!
@Kath67 that's encouraging to hear!
@BrownsvilleG11 If your local timeline is mostly full of twitter escapees then it will be full of people saying it's unlike Twitter. Pick a host that has a like-minded community to you and you may find more relevant chatter. Check out https://instances.social/ for a guided selection process that might work for you

@unixben thanks Ben! I will take your advice. Much appreciated!
@BrownsvilleG11 Try your federated timeline as well, that will help you find people to follow
@unixben yes, I have been scrolling through the federated timeline and following. I think I probably need to do that a bit more and build up a critical mass.
@BrownsvilleG11 I think once it becomes more familiar to new users, eg looking at other tabs than the home tab, there will be a lot more interaction. I’ve been here for a few days and this is the first time I saw the Community tab, where your post was visible to me, for instance.
@Alexandra oh, I think I will need to familiarise myself with the Community tab. I will see if that makes a difference.
@BrownsvilleG11 I think it will just take time. It seems a much quieter place than Twitter. Plus it’s getting to know a different group of people. It’s feels a bit like standing in the corner observing stage for me still.
@mattys_life me too. But I am starting to see the potential a bit more, now that lovely people have been replying.
@BrownsvilleG11 that’s awesome. It does feel like there’s a lot of potential here, and an opportunity to approach things in a different way from the other place.
@mattys_life it certainly does seem to have attracted a nicer crowd. Worth persisting!

@BrownsvilleG11

Strange, I’ve been having almost the opposite experience so far.

I seem to be finding lots of people with similar interests to me - lots of people following me - lots of people liking my posts and “boosting” (is that the right lingo?) so other people can see them. And everyone I interact with seems friendly.

@CactusHaiku I think I am getting the hang of it now, once I reached out a little more. It still feels a little unfamiliar, but not so alienating.
@BrownsvilleG11 @CactusHaiku that's good to hear. people seem far more willing to connect and interact here than on the birdsite, but that may depend on your server.
@BrownsvilleG11 I think it's because most of the conversation is hidden so people don't jump in with corrections or ideas
