There's a kind of mental exhaustion specifically linked to being on social media. I'm hoping that this lumbering dinosaur site will prove a safer, calmer place in the end than the Hitchcock nightmare of the birdsite...

@joannechocolat I find this a much calmer place.

The lack of feed algorithms trying to get your emotions boiling to drive engagement alone makes it a better place.

Familiarise yourself with the three feeds: home, local, federated. Your "home" feed will be the cosiest one with only those you follow in it.

Oh and the shed looks great on Mastodon :-) the extra characters might lead to even more interesting descriptions.

@soapdog maybe it's an #Aspergers thing, or maybe its just that I have a high tolerance for batshittery, but I've never been that bothered by the stuff the 🐦 algorithm serves me. I do like how mastodon works though.
@joannechocolat this place seems so much calmer to me already
@joannechocolat Speaking as an evolutionary biologist, it is my sad duty to inform you that mastodons are not dinosaurs ... but birds are! So Twitter is the dinosaur site.

@mike @joannechocolat

Am I right in thinking that birds are not in the sauropod clade?

My engineering education was rather remiss in this area

@ParkinJim @joannechocolat Yes, you're right. Waaay back amniotes split into the mammal line and the reptile line. Mastodons are among the mammals. Over on the other branch, reptiles begat dinosaurs. Among the dinosaurs are the sauropods and the carnivorous theropods. And birds are theropods.

So birds are closer to sauropods than they are to mammals, but they are not themselves sauropods.

@mike @joannechocolat

I was talking to Dad about scientific progress, and he mentioned reading about plate tectonics in New Scientist, as (almost literally) groundbreaking addition to make Continental drift theory the scientifically accept theory.

Similarly with what I learned about dinosaurs at primary school in the 1979s

@joannechocolat Agreed. Hopefully we won't just move twitter habits onto here.
@joannechocolat lumbering dinosaur not my experience - first thing I had to do was slow down the Federated feeds - but I am old.

@joannechocolat

It was, and I think it will again once everyone has said their excited hellos & settled down - but for now it's too much for me.

(A me thing, not the fault of here. I'm not great with crowds IRL either.)

It IS a better place & I hope you like it here - welcome! πŸ‘‹

@joannechocolat It seems much more polite and relaxed so far. I'm somewhat comfortable so far, and thats a nice thing. As much as I do sometimes find myself enjoying the vicarious thrill of watching some harmful goon get dunked on on the bird site, the lack of goons here turns out to be....... wonderful?
@joannechocolat finding it very calming, and much more engaging🀞
@joannechocolat Maybe it's because I'm not following so many people here (yet?) but it certainly feels calmer at the moment.
@joannechocolat I’m slowly getting used to the differences. I love it though.
@joannechocolat it feels nicer at the moment. I went back to the other place for a bit and it sent my stress levels soaring.
@joannechocolat Weaning myself off news and noise, so the lack of rage-generation algorithms is refreshing. That said, I have no work to publicise, so mileage may vary for creators who rely on Twitter to communicate with their audience. We should all use this reset to seek out new stuff, and carefully curate our feed so it only brings us interesting and lovely things.
@joannechocolat me too. The toxicity of Twitter drove me away from online communities that I really want to be a part of.
@joannechocolat
I like that there are built-in tools that allow a bit of breathing space
@joannechocolat I really am loving that there's a very specific set of cultures here that are in general quite the opposite of the bird site. Some things need working on obvs, but it IS different and my God it makes you feel very different!
@joannechocolat let’s hope so, why I have moved
@joannechocolat it’s lovely 😊 friendly, calmer and good vibes so far. Hope you enjoy it here!

@joannechocolat

I think you will find it safer to be you... or to be Tippy Hedron... here in the fediverse.πŸ˜†

@joannechocolat This is why I designated Friday night to whiskey (or whatever your flavor). We gotta kick back & relax regularly.

@joannechocolat
Unfortunately, social media has, traditionally, been judged on activity rather than utility.

The word they use is "engagement" and we, as users, are encouraged to develop "personal brand" and pimp ourselves out for the benefit of the platform.

The positive and encouraging thing about Mastodon is it doesn't have a megalomaniac owner or greedy shareholders to appease with stats, so whether it succeeds or fails is down to the perspective of individual users.

@joannechocolat I hope so, happy to find you here x
@joannechocolat I am enjoying the lack of pile ons and snarky comments here so far, definitely calmer but miss people too
@joannechocolat There's less people sneaking into mentions to say terrible things.
