I'm enjoying Mastodon so far, mainly as an observer. Still trying to learn the etiquette, especially with CWs and trying to be respectful of the community that was here before a bunch of us board gamers joined. I think what I love the most about Mastodon is that it feels like SOCIAL media, with actual conversations happening and not just a bunch of copy-and-pasted scheduled posts from the birdsite for our latest content or products. It's refreshing.
@ruelgaviola Yes! I totally agree with you. I've seen a few people referring to it as things like 'community media' rather than social media, which I think is accurate. It feels more like a community encouraging and helping each other. I hope we manage to keep our server that way!

@Nixedpun @ruelgaviola I think it has potential in areas Twitter didn't is refreshing/welcome. Conversely, making sure to be observant of the tech's inherent quirks (no meaningful search?) will take me some time getting accustomed to.

I *hope* this (Mastodon in general) turns out as something other just "second run Twitter." I think it would be sad to find out it doesn't. I'm not sure how I can both get and give value in the short term to help that.

@gpage @Nixedpun I appreciate that you're thinking what you can give! It's a nice change from other social media. Here, we're thinking about the community and the social pact that we agree to when we join. I'm curious to see how Mastodon evolves, but for now it's a space that I want to spend more time in.

@gpage @Nixedpun @ruelgaviola Some of that is local. tabletop.social's host has chosen to not support full text search. This is an intentional thing and not necessarily a Bad Thing. Other servers can/do make other choices.

@host Any chance of enabling ElasticSearch (basically: full-text search) on this server?

@Nixedpun @ruelgaviola 100%, it brings me back to the days when forums were all the rage. Its a more focused, passionate and caring group so far. The learning curve is there, but thats just part of it. Every platform has its own learning curves. We are just so used to what we already know, change is hard lol.
@Nixedpun I love the term community media! That's how I feel as I spend more time here.
@ruelgaviola Agree completely. The one thing I dislike is having to rebuild my list of who I follow. I don’t know which people I followed on the birdsite are tooting it up over here.
