I’ve been using Mastodon since Saturday, but I am going out on a limb with a prediction: Mastodon (or the Mastodon model) is the future of social media.

It has the potential of curing the worst evils of social media and creating a genuine and workable public sphere.

I will develop this idea into an essay as soon as I can grab the time, hopefully today.

Adding: Someone told me I should do a CW thingy with my political threads.

I promise to learn how before my next thread.

@Teri_Kanefield I'm hoping this old lady will figure it all out. Technically I'm illiterate 🤪

✌️🇬🇧

@Teri_Kanefield Great that you are here too. Level heads are a great asset even on more level-headed platforms.

@Teri_Kanefield

I agree with you.

However, even with me being a "tech guy" I can see that there is still a good bit of evolving that has to happen to make finding people across federated servers easier.

But, I have no doubt that as usage grows, it will draw in more developer interest for both the core software and tools/plug-ins.

@maceo @Teri_Kanefield Yes, search and archive needs lots of work (in addition to some UI).
@Teri_Kanefield 100%. World wide connection cannot be left to whims of plutocrats or nefarious govt. I think 70-80% of the societal ill come from misunderstanding... some unintentional, some intentional. When more people can see we are more alike than different, we can all work towards a workable solution.

@Teri_Kanefield

Pretty interesting, Teri. I hope you will write more along these lines.

Carol

@Teri_Kanefield I've only been here for a few days, but I agree. This is what social media should have been from the beginning. It's vastly better than ad-based, "engagement"-driven, algorithm-corrupted commercial platforms.
@Teri_Kanefield To me it's much less toxic over here than on Twitter
@Teri_Kanefield if you have an android device, try adding tusky as your interface.

@Teri_Kanefield I've been using a few days myself, and agreed. I like. It has this #oldschool forum/community aspect that is very refreshing.

I like the chronological feeds, the content warnings, internet etiquette is encouraged. 😊
I've felt more connected on this platform than I have on anything I've used since maybe the late 90s (#compuserve days).

@Teri_Kanefield I am both surprised and unsurprised after your post about not wanting to commit over on Twitter. I'm glad you too are feeling the calmer and more deliberate pace here.
@Teri_Kanefield I was wondering about that. A network with no interest in rage-farming. An outbreak of calm and a reduction of polarisation?
@Teri_Kanefield thanks. I come here for political threads but I like cws

@Teri_Kanefield Hmm. CW and Toot-classification look like becoming valuable features of this site.

My bio-pinned Toot lays out my SM "mission". To that end, I can use both features to (a) "protect" non-math readers from being put-off by any "heavy math" parts of a thread and (b) alert math-seeking readers when I am going political. Very nice!

@Teri_Kanefield

The Content Warning Button is just below your in put window like so:

@Teri_Kanefield looking forward to reading your thoughts, what else can we democratize? 🤩
@Teri_Kanefield The CW thingy is really irritating. I understand sensitive people not liking to see things that trigger them, but it seems also to be a bias against content deemed by some to be ‘political’, whatever that means to them. I’m here for political content, not in the sense of partisan bickering or slamming, but the different points of view on important issues. I believe mastodon users can restrict their feeds to non-political/inoffensive content. Shouldn’t that be enough protection?
@Teri_Kanefield I’m still not sure about the CW on so many posts, but otherwise like this format much better, too! I may also adjust to and appreciate the abundant use of CWs in time, as well.
@Teri_Kanefield I am really intrigued by it too. However, most social networks catch on with the younger generations first before expanding. I wonder if we have much Gen Z adoption #onhere? Could be an interesting aspects for your thread to cover perhaps.
@Teri_Kanefield I suggest you add a paragraph or two on governance and funding, with Wikimedia as a reference point. Much to learn from their experience.

@Teri_Kanefield I think the content warning (content notification) issue could be resolved technically but it would have to be adopted by the admins/programmers and I don't want to come across as an interloper.

Each users bio would add hashtags for frequently discussed topics (Politics, Religion, Soccer) and that would show up instead of the posts until it is clicked. We already know folks can turn off the CW feature and always expand or hide posts. Now they could do it based on keywords.

@Teri_Kanefield agreed, governments can’t or won’t regulate the digital robber barons, we can cut off their revenue.
@Teri_Kanefield I’m a fairly recent follower of yours on Twitter and just made a mastodon account yesterday. Have really appreciated your insight and am glad to be able to follow you here. Hoping that eventually there’s enough of my follow list here that I can stop checking Twitter but I’m a still unconvinced that it’ll happen. Fingers crossed!
@Teri_Kanefield https://mastodon.sdf.org/@laurenhug/109314736790736348 here are helpful instructions to add the content warning (use the shield with exclamation point icon) in your post
Lauren Hug (@[email protected])

@SH @Ricardus I’m using the Mastodon app and the fourth icon (after the image, bullets, and emoji icon) is an ! on a shield. That’s the CW warning feature. I’d post a screenshot but image-posting isn’t working for me yet.

Mastodon @ SDF
@Teri_Kanefield So excited to see you here! I know you will thrive and we will too as a part of that.
@Teri_Kanefield I've literally been here 40 mins and I feel the same 😋
@Teri_Kanefield looking forward to your thoughts on this.
@Teri_Kanefield I'm pretty sure it'll completely fracture at some lines like they'll be the parlor/truth/gab circle that'll be their own sphere and then main sphere which will have a sporadic federation. where on the other side, some mirror, perhaps some radical anti-racists that make some people uncomfortable (Not saying this is right, just a prediction of what will be). obv there'll be several complex axies of this.
@Teri_Kanefield Mastodon feels so refreshing... Every time I go back to twitter it looks like 70% of the posts consist in pointing how wrong the ones who don't seem like you are ...

@Teri_Kanefield
Can't guess what a 'CW thingy' is. Help?

What does CW stand for?

@Teri_Kanefield I have met the most fascinating people here, yourself included. So global, so many languages, so many professions and life experiences.

The #Twitanic became a toxic echo chamber, a day room at an asylum.
