@davidallengreen Twitter is just a multitude of echo chambers. I barely had any constructive exchanges with people on Twitter anymore.

Even mild disagreements lead to people insulting and blocking.

Being on Twitter means empowering Elon Musk's far right propaganda machine, making him richer with our free labour.

Actually, if the whole pro-democracy camp, and all the politicians, celebs etc, moved over here, we would have a better public town square.

@aristeon @davidallengreen a lot of the nice/interesting people I knew over there seem to have moved here!

@aristeon @davidallengreen

I agree David. The business model ($$$) of commercial social media is to drive interactions regardless of the quaility. Because Mastodon has no requirement for such a business model, it has been designed to facilitate higher quality interactions and therefore improve users experience.

@jimwrinkle @aristeon @davidallengreen

(New here, trying to understand). But mastadon does have a business model - one based on generous people running their own servers and crowdfunding ? If “your” server fails / shuts down / runs out of money etc does that mean all your stuff is lost ? Certainly saw lots of people asking for donations last week when their capacity was breached.

@gideondavies @aristeon @davidallengreen

But as Mastodon is not a business it is "free and open-source software for running self-hosted social networking services"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastodon_(software)

hosted by kind folks and organisations who do so voluntarily. Unlike other social media platforms, here YOU are not the product, so it is not paid for by advertisers etc. Users assisting with that funding lightens the load.

I can't answer your other question but I am sure others will be able to

Mastodon (software) - Wikipedia

@jimwrinkle @aristeon @davidallengreen In theory, at least, commercial social media can invest in server/human resources to support growth in user numbers. But what happens in the Mastodon fediverse if a user on a server gains millions of followers? Who funds the resources needed for that server to be able to support that user's interactions? Or will they be told to move off and set up and resource their own server? I'm unclear how the Mastodon fediverse model works so that servers can be funded to support growing user numbers and increasing interactions.
@G4OEU @jimwrinkle @davidallengreen I think the donation model can work. Especially if content creators will be able to use it to grow their audience, they will reciprocate and donate to Mastodon.
@aristeon @davidallengreen The thing that tires me out about twitter, and which must tire out prominent twitter users even more, is the fact that nobody in an even slightly prominent position can post anything at all without the replies immediately filling with abusive non-sequiturs from the usual obsessives and bots.. It makes any form of dialogue impossible, and I'm amazed that they continue to even bother.
@aristeon @davidallengreen @m I agree - and not just the prominent tweeters. I’m sure I’m not the only one afraid to comment with even a mildly differing view.

@aristeon @davidallengreen In my view the people aren't really the problem it's the way the algorithm structures the timeline.

A chronological, user controlled timeline will tend to make everyone calmer and more constructive. But it's also less compelling and addictive.

A lot of people will prefer Twitter for the dopamine rush of the strum and drang.

@aristeon @davidallengreen Couldn’t agree more. This place certainly seems to be taking off today.
@aristeon @davidallengreen The irony of your reponse here has tickled me :)

@aristeon @davidallengreen

Right wing politics in the west has become a game of hate. Lie, gaslight, wind people up against eachother and let them go.

I'd like to see more politicians on mastodon but I don't want them to bring their current behaviour with them.

But as it becomes a more popular social network, it becomes inevitable that they will. And that will be a sad day.
