Another note for new #TwitterMigration folks like me: social norms here are that we don’t censor names like “Musk.” It shouldn’t be necessary, because full-text search isn’t really a thing and trolls are actually moderated.

If content is potentially offensive, put it behind a CW, but don’t “c*nsor” it because this breaks people’s filters (i.e., prevents them from being able to mute words).

@tkinias regarding CWs I just saw on another thread someone liken them to subject lines on emails. How seriously are we intended to the the "warning" part? Thoughts?
@m_rhett @tkinias my understanding: some people *also* use them to act like a Content Subject or Title but their primarily role is CW (hence name!).

Content warning: CW "rules"

mastodon.ie
@Nocta @tkinias Oh that helps a LOT! Thank you!

@m_rhett @tkinias

No problem, glad to help 💜

(really small tip if you're on the web interface/on your PC: instead of boosting my message with the link to the other message, you can paste the link in the search bar to access the other message and boost this one directly)

@Nocta @tkinias OH! Another good tip, thank you!
@tkinias How does one mute words here?

@crookedfang @tkinias go to preferences, filters. Create a filter. On Mastodon, every posts that contains the exact text of your filter will be filtered out. You can choose if the post should be hidden behind [Filtered] or dropped entirely.

Note, this is about the web interface, apps usually handle it a bit differently, e.g. not showing the filtered posts at all.

Also it differes for other services in the Fediverse. Misskey for instance allows you to filter based on more complex expressions.

@crookedfang @tkinias It likely varies by instance, but I am able to do so by clicking on settings, going to the "filters" section, and adding a new filter.
@tkinias I think I did that a few times. It takes a while to really internalize that sort of difference..
@tkinias what’s CW?
@tqmirza @tkinias did you work it out, or find an answer?
@tkinias @tqmirza content warning, it’s a button at the bottom of the input box when tooting.
Let’s people decide if they want to see something or not.

@tkinias @tqmirza CW = Content Warning.
When you compose a post you can put a CW on it.
Look for a ‘CW’ button somewhere! Probably bottom left.
When you do so people will only see that CW text and will have to actively reveal the content (unless they have prefs set to not do so?).

Some people *also* use them to act like a Content Subject or Title but their primarily role is CW (hence name!).

@AeonMach @tkinias @tqmirza thank you for the clear reply!
@sparklingspirit pleasure!
(PS I do like your Acer :-) Mine used to look like that until the wind blew all the leaves off…)
@AeonMach photo was taken last month at Westonbirt National Arboretum in Cotswolds. We had an amazing and memorable summer traveling England, seeing fall color there was mind blowing cherry on top!
@sparklingspirit ah I know Westonbirt! My in-laws live near-ish. My kids loved it when they were wee… the bamboo!
@AeonMach It was magical to be there in #autumn. Not only the acre glades, but the majestic 200+ yrs #trees were spectacular. As #americans we are thrilled and delighted by the history in #england
@sparklingspirit yup, there’s a lot of history around in England (and Europe generally)!
I live in Scotland in what can be described as a planned “new town”.
From the 1700s! ;-)
@AeonMach 🤣 when we return (likely summer ‘24) Scotland is on our list!
@AeonMach Is there convention around using CW in replies? Other than the if you were replying with sensitive content, like length etc.

@NadiaAmina tbh I’m pretty new here myself but there *does* seem to be a strong convention to use the CW as not just a warning of NSFW or very sensitive stuff but for anything that might be stressful and that specifically includes politics!
So as I said above, people seems to use them as Content Subject (perhaps keywords rather than a title per se!).

For example if one was writing something about recent US midterm elections (topical) you might set CW = “US POLITICS, MIDTERM ELECTIONS”.

@tkinias thank you for this information!
@tkinias what does “put it behind a CW” mean?
@tkinias heavens! Newbie here. What’s a CW, and how do I put a post behind one? Is there a primer I can read?!!

@AvisHG
CW = ‘content warning’ (like I’ve used on this reply).

How you do it depends on your server and if you’re using a mobile app, but on my instance’s Web interface it’s a button in between privacy (globe icon) and language settings when you compose a post.

@AvisHG @tkinias
The CW button where you toot from. If you select it, a space will show up above the toot area for you to add a content warning or description. when people see it in their time line they can select 'see more' if they want to see what's in the toot.
@tkinias @katherine_montalto @AvisHG "Toot" is Mastodon-ese for "post". You can think of it as equivalent to "tweet", as both verb and noun.
@katherine_montalto @tkinias is that a mastodon tweet?
@AvisHG @tkinias yes. sorry. I should have explained that too :)
@tkinias apologies if I’ve asked you, but HOW does one put a message behind a CW?
@tkinias important nuance, thank you
@tkinias Thanks! That is a great tip for twitter castaways like me.
