Next Luddite question from me: how do we upload native videos to Mastodon, like we do on Twitter? πŸ™‚
Thanks for all the useful responses, folks
@mehdihasan
Make sure to use CW liberally here. The existing culture is one of inclusivity -- and it's important to let others clock out from certain topics as needed, and to avoid triggers. Many people won't share your content without it, and in the absence of algorithms, posts are lost in the void if not reblogged and hashtagged.
@mehdihasan With the paperclip. However, it doesn't seem able to take the size of the files.
@mehdihasan if you are on Metatext there’s an attachment πŸ“Ž You can use for that. Note surfers are slow so videos and photos can be issues. Welcome.
@flyingyogini @mehdihasan Follow up to the Flying Yogini. What app are you using Mehdi?
@mehdihasan I don't know how but it looks like @rbreich seems to have figured it out. πŸ™‚
@mehdihasan Hi Mehdi. I just tested it out myself and made a gif of myself doing it, so you could see what I did.
@mehdihasan
Yep, paperclip and straight up upload a file. I believe size limits on attachments are instance/server specific.
Haven't hit any limit yet on mastodon.coffee
@mehdihasan Try the paper clip icon where you post your Toot
@mehdihasan large file hosting demands are going to be a pain point for growth on this platform, given the volunteer-run nature of most servers
@mehdihasan I see folks helping you out down thread but popping in here to say welcome friend!

@mehdihasan It looks like the max video size that can be uploaded is 8 MB (EDIT: actually 40 MB, see thread), which may make a pretty short video depending on the video's bit-rate. Right now, it seems the best options is to upload it to another video side (I.E., YouTube) and link to it in your post.

Video is one of the hardest thing to store on a server, so limiting how big they can be was probably the best compromise at the moment so that servers don't get filled out by video files too fast.

@nickistre @mehdihasan +1 on the YouTube idea.on my server its 4mb and there are resolution limits too.

@monsterlander @mehdihasan

Poked into it further and looks like the hard limit set in the code is 10 mb for images and 40 mb for videos, but each server can have their own limits set lower: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/blob/main/app/models/media_attachment.rb#L41-L42

@monsterlander @mehdihasan @nickistre I’m new here, but, and although I’ve seen quite a few YouTube links here and there, my impression is that the #fediverse philosophy is about the non-commercialization of the internet, so I will (had to look it up!) mention #PeerTube as the fedi version. I don’t have personal experience uploading or watching.
@monsterlander @nickistre @mehdihasan I didn’t realize who I was responding to! I have heard Mehdi on several of the #PodSaveAmerica episodes πŸ™

@johnkoen

Imagine how I felt when he thanked me directly.

As for "fediverse" versions of popular social sites, you've mentioned #PeerTube as a #Youtube alternative, but there's also #PixelFed (#Instagram), #OwnCast (#Twitch), #Friendica (#FaceBook) and so many more. I.E., I have a PixelFed account at @[email protected], and you're able to follow, boost, and comment from any of the above and #Mastodon.

@nickistre @[email protected] That’s amazing! ❀️ interestingly, when I go to my (empty, haven’t even made a profile there yet) PixelFed account, I can see your pics, but 0 toots or media show up when I access it here (through Metatext). I may double check through Mastodon in the browser, or maybe the searches etc. haven’t yet cross-pollinated yet?
@mehdihasan i used the paper-clip attachment icon in the message pane to attach this mp4.

@mehdihasan it seems to have converted it to a gif tho O_o

likely need to post youtube/platform links?

@mehdihasan Looks like it doesn't always work native https://infosec.exchange/@triciakickssaas/109310099649306717

And, I suspect size limits are up to each mastodon instance owner.

Safer to YouTube/Vimeo prbly.

Infosec Exchange

@mehdihasan and, over on infosec.exchange that video embed worked fine.

so safest path is likely poster image + link to platform video.

@mehdihasan It may be easier to upload the video to YouTube as unlisted since they have the data streaming bandwidth

@mehdihasan

Nothing "Luddite" in the #Fediverse :) I would recommend for your organisation to run an instance of #peertube and publish videos there, then connecting them to Mastodon

@mehdihasan
PeerTube uses ActivityPub, a federating protocol that allows you to interact with other software, provided they also use this protocol. For example, PeerTube and Mastodon -a Twitter alternative- are connected: you can follow a PeerTube user from Mastodon (the latest videos from the PeerTube account you follow will appear in your feed), and even comment on a PeerTube-hosted video directly from your Mastodon's account
@mehdihasan (Aside: if you're going to be doing this a lot, there are special servers with special software for it. ("Peertube".) We can still see posts there from here. folks often have two accounts, one of each.)

@mehdihasan

Others have said use the paperclip, but on the Sndroid Mastodon app there is none. Use the envelope icon on the bottom left of the page.

@mehdihasan Someone said that videos are discouraged because they take up server space. Given how new I am here, I have no idea…

Just a reminder about Mastodon. Try not to directly upload videos here. You have to remember that these videos have to be stored on the server that you're hosted on. This would also eat up on available bandwidth, storage and memory resources of said servers and slow them down. Which would force server hosts to upgrade at a substantial cost. Suggested idea... Upload to Peertube, Vimeo or other video streaming services and share the link to the video here instead. (Edited)

Mastodon 🐘

@mehdihasan I am new here too, but from what i gather you post them places like youtube and link them here. However, if you are digging the whole fediverse thing, check out peertube for video sharing and pixelfed for photo sharing!

As more and more people are asking me about Mastodon I felt a need for a picture to point at, showcasing how the software known as Mastodon fits into the much larger concept of the Fediverse. I made this infographic to help myself and others explain the many different use-cases

@mehdihasan I posted a video by uploading from my photo library - seemed to work I think
@mehdihasan your show is the best! MSNBC needs to give you more time. Andrea M needs to retire.

@mehdihasan Maybe use a federated video sharing site like PeerTube:
