@centralbylines

Welcome to mastadon. It seems weird to start with but, in my experience, within a couple of days you'll start to get to grips with it.

Lots of lovely people on here too!

@centralbylines it would make sense for the bylines network to have its own instance under the bylinesnetwork.co.uk domain, so that it's easy to verify that the various outlets' accounts are genuine
@ilmari @centralbylines I second this idea. Though the overhead of running a mastodon server is kinda big.
@fasih @centralbylines there are several providers that will do it for a reasonable fee, e.g. masto.host
@centralbylines @ilmari @mikegalsworthy this makes sense to me. It would give bylines network control of federation (which servers you accept/block interaction with) as well as accounts created on it.

@fasih @ilmari @mikegalsworthy

Thanks, we have also WhatsApped this thread to Mike and will have a think. Silly question does this mean we would have to start again? We only joined this afternoon and the whole picking a server part baffled us a bit.

To be fair none of the tech team were setting up the accounts!

@centralbylines @fasih @mikegalsworthy you can migrate all your followers and follows over to the new account once you've created it

@ilmari @centralbylines @mikegalsworthy it just means, that you would pick your own server hosted by yourselves to create these accounts. You can block other people from creating accounts on your server and only create the accounts of contributors yourself.

I think the only caveat is, you canโ€™t migrate content. Just the followers. There is also a redirect feature for accounts.

@ilmari @centralbylines would definitely like to know more about this. Weโ€™re very new to Mastodon and trying to work out the structureโ€ฆ

Is this something you could teach us?

@mikegalsworthy sorry, I don't have any experience setting up a mastodon instance myself. but once you have one, the migration path is easy: https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/103393780267601137
@centralbylines - Good to see you here, Bylines. Following you. Follow me back for #ProgressiveAlliance stuff. @YeomanRuth on Twitter.
@RuthYeoman now following Ruth, having only joined this afternoon, it has been quite a learning curve and phone won't start pinging away. We guess that is good news!
@centralbylines - Yes. It needs some getting used to. But the cooperative model is just what we need.
@centralbylines assume that you cover Northamptonshire?

@centralbylines followed! Good to see you here!
@centralbylines are the other twitter byelines-related accounts on here too? IIRC there are southern, western, central etc accounts

@centralbylines Woohoo! Great to see you

For reference, there's a great little tool here that searches and attempts to match Twitter handles with Mastodon handles

It then generates a csv with the results which can be imported into Mastodon
