Let's start posting assorted images of #dinosaurs and such here to expand the #palaeoart #paleoart representation on mastodon. I'm trying to find and follow the people whose stuff I like -- can we get a thread going so I find more, please? Tag with #PaleoartAtMastodon and help us find our people :) Here are assorted old images I've done ...
@TetZoo The extended head posture in that diplodocid is making me uncomfortable.
@mike A valid and interesting point. The sauropod in that illustration (it was done for the 2nd ed of DHTLE) is deliberately shown as a ground-feeder as per the view favoured by some authors, it's not meant to show that I think is 'best' as per their feeding behaviour. Then again, even poorly designed animals like us can extend our head-neck junctions to an uncomfortable degree.
@TetZoo We can; but we don't :-)
@mike That's a lie, I just did it. Didn't do me any good, mind you.
@TetZoo OK, I admit I did it too, just before posting, to see what it would feel like. What it felt like was: bad.
@TetZoo Here is the new Thescelosaurus artwork from my SVP talk by Christopher DiPiazza. Not sure if he is on Mastodon, but I really love this one.
@Boydpaleo Epic! Sadly I didn't get to see your talk but congrats, great stuff. I've been meaning to ask if you're aware of certain early 2000s statements by Mark Norell where he refers to thescelosaurs as 'armored' - was wondering if he was aware of these spurs and thinking of them as osteoderms or such...
@TetZoo Morris (1976: p. 98) mentions small osteoderns found adjacent to cervicals 1-4 in referred specimen LACM 33543. I am told by others that have seen the specimen (I have not) that they appear to be washed in crocodylian osteoderms. None of the other articulated specimens (e.g., MOR 979, NCSM 15728) show any signs of osteoderms.
@Boydpaleo I recall the Morris descriptions and photos (in the Athlon volume I think) and -- yeah, they're croc osteoderms. Thanks for thoughts.
@Boydpaleo @TetZoo There were some of Korean-translated Japanese books from early 1990s showed Thescelosaurus with osteoderms.
@palaeotaku @TetZoo got and pics of those reconstructions? Would love to see.
@Boydpaleo @TetZoo Unfortunately I don't have these books now but I could ask others for photos.
@Boydpaleo @TetZoo But from the Japanese book published around 1990 or 1991, there is a reconstruction of Hypsilophodon with osteoderms. I am not sure whether the artist was influenced by 'osteoderms' in Thescelosaurus but still interesting take. For people who can't read Japanese, the green theropod represents Calamospondylus.
@palaeotaku @TetZoo oh beautiful!
@Boydpaleo @TetZoo This is the Thescelosaurus showing osteoderms which I talked above, from one of the Korean-translated Japanese book. It was published around 1993 or 1995.
@palaeotaku @TetZoo I am guessing this ends as a bad day for the Thescelosaurus. 🤣
@Boydpaleo @TetZoo Finally, here's the full segment with the Thescelosaurus.
@Boydpaleo @TetZoo Here's the another thescelosaur illustration with osteoderms, from the unknown artist.

@TetZoo These are great drawings (and I think not seen before outside of your patreon customers? ), but they don't have captions.

Many people here won't boost photos unless they have a caption briefly describing the photo, and I'm thinking about adopting that habit myself. (There should be an edit or caption button in your app to add them - I don't think you can do it to already posted photos. )

@llewelly Ok, thanks for telling me - obviously, I didn't know that. Will admit that I'm lazy on adding captions since -- once writing the tweet, I'm keen to post it asap. But duly noted.
@TetZoo oh, and some of them have been in your books.
@TetZoo Here are my some selected artworks, which I used in my undergraduate thesis about the certain South Korean dinosaur tracksite. These images are representing theropod trackmakers and paleoenvironment.

@TetZoo "Let's start posting assorted images of #dinosaurs and such here to expand the #palaeoart #paleoart representation on mastodon."

Sure, here you go!

@mike @TetZoo Wow, peak #paleoart at Mastodon already. Why were such masterworks not included in the new Mesozoic Art book? Is the world not ready for them?
@markwitton @TetZoo I don't get it. I am easy to find online. Why did the editors of the book contact me? I can only be a conspiracy. It's Big Palaeoart up to their tricks again.
@mike @markwitton @TetZoo Shadowbanned for being too avant guard.
@john @markwitton @TetZoo The world was never meant for one as beautiful as my Brontosaurus artwork.
@mike @john @markwitton Well, book 2 is going to happen so keep an eye on your emails
@TetZoo @mike @john I see what's going on here: we're building to a specific collection of #MikeTaylorAwesomeDinosaurArt. Clearly didn't want the series to peek too early.
@markwitton @TetZoo @john For anyone who is late to the #MikeTaylorAwesomeDinoArt party, here is another sample, this time from my Speculative Palaeobiology collection:
@mike @markwitton @john Mastodon palaeoart peaked too early, it's all downhill from here
@mike
Best paleo-art ever
@bloomoom Thank you. I don't like to seem arrogant, but I can only agree.
@mike @markwitton I will re-iterative that, err, we'll call you. Just keep watching those emails.
@TetZoo @mike One does not *email* for artwork of such quality. One *signals*.
@markwitton @TetZoo @mike
Few days in and we already have memes on Paleo-Mastodon
@DEGL_TOONS @markwitton @TetZoo Don't say I never do anything for you guys. #MikeTaylorAwesomeDinoArt enters the realm of mammals!
@mike @DEGL_TOONS @TetZoo I love the delicate details in the skin and the look of intelligence you've put into the eye. And the hair at the end of the tail? [Chef's kiss]

@markwitton @DEGL_TOONS @TetZoo What can I tell you? I learned from the best.

#ProTip! Sometimes JPEG artifacts can look like skin texture!

@mike @TetZoo It's definitely the best sauropod ever, but it needs a caption, because otherwise no one will know what it is. : )

Many people in the fediverse won't boost images unless they have a caption briefly describing the image, and I'm thinking about adopting that habit myself. (There should be an edit or caption button in your app to add them - I don't think you can do it to already posted images. )

Thank you.
