Let's start posting assorted images of #dinosaurs and such here to expand the #palaeoart #paleoart representation on mastodon. I'm trying to find and follow the people whose stuff I like -- can we get a thread going so I find more, please? Tag with #PaleoartAtMastodon and help us find our people :) Here are assorted old images I've done ...
@TetZoo Here is the new Thescelosaurus artwork from my SVP talk by Christopher DiPiazza. Not sure if he is on Mastodon, but I really love this one.
@Boydpaleo Epic! Sadly I didn't get to see your talk but congrats, great stuff. I've been meaning to ask if you're aware of certain early 2000s statements by Mark Norell where he refers to thescelosaurs as 'armored' - was wondering if he was aware of these spurs and thinking of them as osteoderms or such...
@TetZoo Morris (1976: p. 98) mentions small osteoderns found adjacent to cervicals 1-4 in referred specimen LACM 33543. I am told by others that have seen the specimen (I have not) that they appear to be washed in crocodylian osteoderms. None of the other articulated specimens (e.g., MOR 979, NCSM 15728) show any signs of osteoderms.
@Boydpaleo @TetZoo There were some of Korean-translated Japanese books from early 1990s showed Thescelosaurus with osteoderms.
@palaeotaku @TetZoo got and pics of those reconstructions? Would love to see.
@Boydpaleo @TetZoo Unfortunately I don't have these books now but I could ask others for photos.
@Boydpaleo @TetZoo But from the Japanese book published around 1990 or 1991, there is a reconstruction of Hypsilophodon with osteoderms. I am not sure whether the artist was influenced by 'osteoderms' in Thescelosaurus but still interesting take. For people who can't read Japanese, the green theropod represents Calamospondylus.
@palaeotaku @TetZoo oh beautiful!
@Boydpaleo @TetZoo This is the Thescelosaurus showing osteoderms which I talked above, from one of the Korean-translated Japanese book. It was published around 1993 or 1995.
@palaeotaku @TetZoo I am guessing this ends as a bad day for the Thescelosaurus. 🤣
@Boydpaleo @TetZoo Finally, here's the full segment with the Thescelosaurus.
