One of the things I'm enjoying here is that I can drink from different hoses based upon my time and mood.

I can drink from the sink of Home to see people I'm following.

I can drink from the garden hose with the Local timeline and see content from #tabletop people. This reminds me of chatting at a convention - mostly gaming talk, but I also learn about other aspects of their lives.

If I want a firehose of who-knows-what, I open up the federated timeline for a blast of the #Mastodon world.

@scottnicholson I’m waiting for Thursday so I can get my FolkloreThursday fix — and I am also waiting for my list of Twitter followers who are also on Mastodon to download.

#FolkloreThursday has gems like this on it:

Following Herne the Hunter’s Tangled Webs Through ‘Mischief Acts’ – #FolkloreThursday

@scottnicholson A question - tabletop.social does not currently have open registration except for the existing user invites. Would you mind sharing one with me, so that I could transfer my profile accordingly?

@scottnicholson Agreed!

I think I'd like more inter-instance features, such as: You can browse any instance timeline that you / your instance aren't blocked from. (I hear some apps allow this, but I haven't gotten it to work yet.) I want to drink from different garden hoses!

Maybe the solution is multiple accounts? Makes me wonder if there are apps designed to easily manage multiple accounts? (Maybe they all do and I'm just daft?) Maybe when I learn to use lists, they might help?

@keithjones I was thinking that as well - maybe there is an app/website that will log into multiple accounts and pluck the local stream from each account into a different column, or collect the locals from different accounts into one stream. I haven't looked yet, though, as I want to figure out the basics first.
@scottnicholson Yeah, I think I'd like to see a kind of best practices, (or tips and tools) guide for navigating multiple instances... it's the one thing I'm feeling pretty uncertain about. Otherwise, this is heavenly (so far) in comparison to mainstream alternatives.
@scottnicholson @keithjones You can paste or type the domain name (like mine, mastodon.nz) into a browser and click Local to see other ones.

@Appbeza

Okay, yeah I think was told that and forgot already, so thank you. 😄. Something about the way the domain comes up keeps making me think you need a login to access the domain at all.

@scottnicholson

@scottnicholson @keithjones I’m using whalebird, which looks a lot like Slack, and Toot! on iOS, to do this.
@scottnicholson I'm still trying to figure out how to make this work. Have you got any tips for newcomers?
@scottnicholson
Agreed. It is also a good argument for instances dedicated to a specific topic (unfortunately I am on a general one, much of the local timeline is of little interest to me).
As tabletop is not my only interest, IMHO it would be nice if I could select another server dedicated to another topic and see its local timeline.
@Gargron has done an amazing job getting it to this stage. It's still early days. I am sure with time new features will be added.
@scottnicholson that's a helpful summary and helps give me a reference point as I start to wander around. Thank you.
@scottnicholson Yeah, I do like the different feeds, especially as a new user looking for interesting people to follow. It lets my pick my exposure level according to my mood and current focus. Not sure yet how I feel about the platform overall, but that's probably my favorite aspect of it.
