To expand on #introductions I'd like to see people repost something they posted about in the past that they feel had been ignored by the #birdsite's #algorithm. If you do, please boost or repeat these instructions.

To add to the above:

Since there is no #algorithm it is really important that you #boost interesting posts by others.

A star (liking) does nothing to help increase a post's visibility beyond the original author's followers.

I know it is strange coming from 🐦, but it really is the only way to increase a post's audience.

So #BoostAllTheThings (if you like them) and you will notice others will do the same to your content. Here we're all in it together!

Apologies - too much boosting can be a bit overwhelming, so for my own sanity and productivity I'll have to mute the above post (at least for a while).

@axwax regarding stars - ive noticed that i cant really see how many stars posts have with the exception of posts i've starred or my own posts. like, i see how many stars my posts have and posts that i have starred show up as having one star but all other posts are at 0 stars. do you know if this is how it should be or is this an instance setting of some sort?

Only the author and you see the number of stars - I believe this is by design to discourage the birdsite-style popularity contest, although I don't have a first hand source for this info right now.

Has anyone else got a good link that mentions this?

Another way to explain this would be:

* Boost = boost the visibility: show the post to your followers.
* Like = appreciate: show appreciation to the author, they get a notification that you liked it.

Yes, it seems like various phone apps and the website all call it differently, but "reblog", "re-toot" and "boost" is all basically the same thing.

To add to the confusion, different instances might call that button yet something else and/or change its icon.

Well, keeps you on your toes I guess 🙃

@axwax Feels similar to Tumblr. When some of the TikTok/Twitter users came over we had to be like "please reblog things, no one is going to see you like something!".

I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to #boost this before realizing it's the button that links to `https://fosstodon.org/interact/109268992804473312?type=reblog`. On my home server it has a "Boost" tooltip, but not when I'm looking at the post on fostodon.

I'm #NewHere and trying not to just whine that everything I don't understand is bad UX. I'm excited to see how these interfaces evolve to hopefully make it easier for new users.

Maybe they renamed it in the new version? Here we're still running v 3.5.3 of Mastodon

I guess the other important puzzle pieces to get over that initial hurdle are:

- have a good introduction and profile description
- use hashtags liberally
- interact with others
- a little bit of patience and persistence at first

But it looks like you're already well on the case 🙂

@axwax Having trouble uploading media to publish both using the iOS and the web based client. Seems to be hung up in the upload and processing states. Publish button is never selectable. Perhaps it’s the servers or?
