As a general rule do you have more male than female friends? Or the other way around? And how do you explain it to yourself why this is so?
@PhilippaPerry More female friends. Dad set a high bar for what a man should be. Too many boys who haven't matured.
@PhilippaPerry more female than male. Although if I were to limit it to “close friends I speak to one-on-one (not on social media) regularly” it’s more equal. I think women <are socialised to> just put more time, effort and vulnerability into maintaining friendships. There’s also that I obviously come from a highly gender-separated culture to start off with.
@PhilippaPerry I struggle a bit with this question. Until fairly recently, I'd say I have had better friendships with women than with men. I worked in a sector with a pretty high level of gender equality, and lived in cities. Now I live in quite a prosperous, rural setting, and I find that people here, while lovely, have much more set expectations that husbands will socialize with husbands and wives with wives.
@mammoth subtle changes in the culture make s big difference
@PhilippaPerry workplace friends mostly women as my profession is over 90% women!
@PhilippaPerry More female the older I get I think. Something about shared experience.
@PhilippaPerry More female, I think. Why? It's a question I've asked myself. Perhaps because I'm not a macho male? And perhaps because I have been abused mainly by males (though I realise my perception may be somewhat twisted and no gender has a monopoly on abuse).
@PhilippaPerry I have more female friends at the moment although there have been times in my life when I had more male friends (eg at uni). I don't really choose my friends in terms of gender, more by how we click, sense of humour and how being around them makes me feel.
@PhilippaPerry Female, always have… no idea why… I don’t notice
@PhilippaPerry
What are friends…asking for an autist? 🤷🏻‍♂️
@mcareaveyjb @PhilippaPerry more male than female, because I’m (almost certainly) a female autist.
@antinomy @PhilippaPerry
Interesting, Kate, as I used to have more female friends 😀
@PhilippaPerry @mcareaveyjb I think this isn’t uncommon. I made (make?) and odd girl/woman. This is probably mostly because I make an odd human. But women mind (and police) that a *lot* more than men. And I suspect the same is true on the other side.
@PhilippaPerry I’m lucky, my husband is very trusting and a great person. I have male and female friends. I was closest to my Dad when growing up so initially made many male friends then I grew to like female friends. So I have a lovely array of friends from around the world.
