Hey there everyone! 👋

Please have a look at my website because it will probably answer a lot of your questions about how to use Mastodon and the Fediverse:

➡️ https://fedi.tips

If you're recommending me as a follow to others, it would be great if you could mention the site too so that new people get help straight away.

I am getting repeating questions that are already answered on the website, so it would help a LOT if you could tell new people about the site as well as my account! 😅

@feditips
I also wrote this explanation with a church analogy because I know people who are more churchy than technical

I live an area where even most of the left-wingers go to church on Sunday

@feditips this is a really good resource. Thanks for putting this up.

@AnyCat

@feditips hey, thanks for the master post. I get the feeling a ton of twitter expats will be looking into this.
@feditips I keep thinking that I'll update my fedi guide site, but then I see sites like yours which are already doing a much better job to point people to

@david

Oh no! I'm not wanting to discourage diversity!

My site's text is available under CC-By-SA if you want to use it on your own site?

The licence allows derivative works if someone wants to take it in a different direction, and the basic facts are public domain anyway.

@feditips
This looks great, thanks so much for all the work you put in to the fediverse community. One little niggle, I think comparing Friendica to FB sets people up for disappointment when they try it, rather than allowing them to evaluate it on its own merits. Maybe there was more equivalence at one time, but these days neither the feature set nor the UI of FB is much like Friendica. It's more akin to a federated LiveJournal or WordPress.
@Strypey @Fedi.Tips 🎃 To be fair, #Friendica was seen as a kind of "#Facebook without being Facebook" once it was discovered. It was mainly a federation powerhouse that could connect with everything that moved to the point of even the federation with #Diaspora being entirely the work of the Friendica devs. It was social first and. foremost while already showing hints of the Swiss Army knife that'd later be known as #Hubzilla.

Speaking of which, there are some more projects on the #Fediverse that could be mentioned under "The Fediverse beyond Mastodon". I've already mentioned the federated social jack-of-all-trades Hubzilla which is sometimes described as a "federated social content management system". #Pleroma could be mentioned as an alternative to #Mastodon for those for whom 500 characters are too few, and who still don't want to go all the way and use a heavyweight like Friendica or Hubzilla. Then there's #WriteFreely, currently the most promising federated blog engine. And, of course, #Funkwhale which is audio hosting and streaming in the Fediverse. Maybe also #Lemmy which is similar to #Reddit.

Mastodon - NZOSS
@feditips
Finally had a chance to read some of the tips. Very well done. If I started with your website fedi.tips I would have saved myself some consternation (toots, instances, edit images), but figuring it out also meant I spent a lot of time interacting with people and toots. Win/Win either way. Definitely recommend for those who want to spend less time floundering.

@feditips hope this isn’t a repeated question- if so can you just let me know where it is on your site

The eye - see enclosed screenshot- what does it mean?

And thanks for the guide - have read a lot of it. Simple English text makes for great readability

@feditips I just signed up and have been told by other new members that they have been sending me dms, but there is nothing in my dm folder and I can’t figure out how to send any
@feditips
One thing my googling skills has failed me at is how to create and maintain a relay.
@feditips is there a way follow things like #ue5 so they show up in feed or just following a bot that boosts these post the way to go?

@JustADon

What I've learned so far is to go to the web client, click on # Explore in the menu, search for the hashtag you want, then look at what search comes up with. Click the one you want if there are multiple options - it'll show an activity graph and how many people have been talking about that hashtag in the last 2 days. Once you're on the specific hashtag you want, click the icon next to the tag name that looks like a person and +.

It'll show up in your feed then.

@JustADon

You can also click on a hashtag in a message in one of your feeds and jump straight to the messages talking about that tag, and then follow from there.

Tusky doesn't have this type of process, from what I can tell. It may be a limitation with mobile clients, idk. I've been jumping on the web client here and there when I see a hashtag that I want to follow, and it's worked out great.

I follow #UE5, which is how I saw your post this morning.

@buddhabound I just followed #ue5 on https://mastodon.social/ so thanks for the help

@JustADon
Did you figure it out? I think, from the screenshot you sent, that you have to click that line where it says "UE5 35 people talking about this" to actually pull up the feed of the posts. Once you get to that, then you'll see the add symbol on the top right side of the column next to the hashtag name header above the column.

I'm still being lazy and in my bed, but I'll be up in a little bit and can post a screenshot if you still need help. Lemme know!

@buddhabound Yes I clicked it and there is no add person thing but it worked in another old account but i thing its just a client issue I can follow in inspector xhr request I think trying that one
@buddhabound apparently only some servers have it(in case you can't see @feditips reply)
I will just use .social account for hashtags for a while
