Welcome to the Fediverse. It's nice here!

Remember to report horrible things, your admins and mods can and will deal with it.

Don't try to "grow your brand" here, the Fedi doesn't really work like that. Virality doesn't really happen. It's nice!

Connect with people. Make new friendships. Just be, in a place that respects you as a human.

#FediTips

The irony of this post going viral is not lost on me.
@aurynn only by fedi standards
@PetraOleum It's still pretty Number Go Big
@aurynn The lack of "grow your brand" here is absolutely my favorite part.
@mike yeah it's so good, so much less of that horrible aspect of social media
@mike @aurynn reminds me of older interests-driven forums crossed with IRC, in a good way. Looking forward to hopefully never seeing another Twitter thread on why X made Y millions of dollars by skipping cream in their morning coffee or whatever.
@aurynn are the mods per server?

@geekoncoffee Yep, each instance has its own admins and moderators.

When you make a report, it goes to your local admins and mods - in your case, ruby.social.

You'll have the option to ALSO forward it to the mods of whereever the content that you're reporting originated as well, so that their mods can take action too.

@aurynn cool, that's helpful to know. Not sure why I didn't think about the fact that picking a server had tradeoffs, I was just following the crowd. Makes me wonder, is it possible to block entire servers?
@geekoncoffee yep, it is. You can block an entire server yourself, and your instance can also block an entire instance for everyone, which we call โ€œdefederatingโ€.

@aurynn

> Virality doesn't really happen. It's nice!

That's it that's why things feel so chill here. I don't have to worry about tooting something that's gonna bring mean people out of the woodwork. Also there's no dunking here like birdsite.

@aurynn Thatโ€™s what I did on Twitter too.

@aurynn do โ€œhorrible thingsโ€ include stuff like selling prescriptions drugs, and otherwise spammy things like that?

I liked your blog post โ€œContempt Cultureโ€

@ibumichele yep, it does. Report away!
@aurynn It's like the bird-site is an internet-point- gathering game.
But the Fediverse is an actual social network.

@saphkey I think what made me stick with Twitter so long is that I have all these memories of when it was a social network, in the beginning.

And it feels so great to have it again, here.

@aurynn I like it, but I am feeling a bit of fomo on my little server as opposed to the main one. I guess in the long run it doesnโ€™t matter what server you are on? Or am I doing this wrong?

@adele if you check the Federated timeline, you can see a bunch of interesting people to follow. Otherwise, thereโ€™s @FediFollows that you can check out ๐Ÿ™‚

Overall, a smaller server will give you a much more community vibe than a large one

@aurynn @FediFollows is the federated timeline what comes up when I hit the home icon? Or do I need to view in browser to see it? Sorry, I tried the help section but got an error, think itโ€™s overwhelmed!

@adele online you should be able to see 3 timelines: Home, Local & Federated.

Home is people you follow & posts they share from others.

Local is everyone on aus.social.

Federated is every person on every network of all the connected servers across Mastodon.

You build your home timeline yourself, by following/unfollowing other people.

I might be missing some stuff but I hope this is helpful.

Post questions, or ask the team at Aus.social. Someone will try to help ๐Ÿ˜Š

@heyrochelle thanks! I discovered you canโ€™t see these things on the official app, so now using Metatext!
@adele cool! Thatโ€™s what I use too. It seems to do most of the things I want it to ๐Ÿ˜„
@aurynn that sounds lovely. Thanks for the info. This community seems very kind. Although i wish Iโ€™d found it sooner, its better late than never ๐Ÿ˜„
@aurynn Aurynn! Donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve said hi since the ADN days. Hullo!
@aurynn so.. It's not a competition here? Oh my. This is relaxing
@Br3nda nothing to compete on. Just be, and enjoy the being. ๐Ÿ™‚
@aurynn It seems pretty good so far. I dislike personal branding anyway. I'm not a can of soup on a supermarket shelf.
@aurynn personal brands are pretty old hat these days anyhow ;)
@aurynn ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
@aurynn but think about all the Alpha Male vibes you'll be missing!
@jmangt And nothing of value was lost ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜‚
@aurynn Hi, I'm new here. How does moderation work? What's stopping someone to open an unmoderated instance and that leaking to all the rest? (sorry for the newbie questions...)

@Dubikan Hey, there's no problem with newbie questions, I'm happy to help. ๐Ÿ™‚

Moderation is on a per-instance level, so admins can block those sorts of "free speech" and hostile/bigoted servers from being able to interact with their users at all.

There's a culture (around the hashtag FediBlock) of making sure that those hostile instances are caught and blocked quickly.

@aurynn I would be kinda ok with some "grow your brand here" tbh, but yeah, its nicer to not have any of it :D
