Ok, Mastodon is officially a lot more awesome than I had realised. There's a federated server for everyone who's really into bitcoin, and, yes, it is full of people who are as awful as you can imagine. But, with one click, you can block the entire domain! 12.8k thousand crypto weirdos filtered out in a click. Amazing.
@SteveCooke That really is quite the killer feature.
@SteveCooke I'm laughing so hard at this comment
@SteveCooke truly the pinicle of technological achievement:D
@SteveCooke almost dismissed your post then reached the punchline and loved it!
@SteveCooke that's one of my favorite part for sure

@SteveCooke I was just talking with @aurynn yesterday about how yes, there's an entire CHUNK of the fediverse that's flooded with horrible people, even though a lot of folks keep accusing the fediverse of being strictly left-leaning.

But they're not whining about the "left-leaning" thing because they can't have their own spaces. They're whining because they feel entitled to impose their horribleness on other people. They're whining because they want their actions to have no consequences.

Anyway yes I love that hexagons can just exist OVER THERE, where they're not my problem anymore lol

@zkat @SteveCooke @aurynn it's also interesting that in the cases where you haven't yet blocked them, and you see messages from them, every single one of those messages are inevitability absolutely horrible.

It's like these people are absolutely incapable of posting anything that is not carefully designed to be as awful as possible.

I mean, it makes it easier to decide what servers to block, but it's remarkable that just just single focused they are on spreading a single type of message.

@loke @zkat @SteveCooke @aurynn it's impressive, doesn't that people have favourite foods, songs they like, pets to post photos of, anything to share that isn't hate?
@hmantegazzi @zkat @SteveCooke @aurynn You'd think, but please go and look at the main feed of something like fse and make up your own opinion.
@loke @zkat @SteveCooke @aurynn As Al Franken recently quoted Margaret Atwood on @ASlavitt 's In The Bubble podcast: "what do you have to remember is it was fun being a Nazi. The thing about this cruelty is they have fun. They have fun being cruel."
@zkat @SteveCooke @aurynn Exactly. That’s why social networks like P*rler or Tr*th Social didn’t really take off: there was noone on which the fascists there could spew their hate, even though that is what entertains them. And if more (sensible) people keep leaving Twitter, fascists are going to get bored of it.
@CyruxiME
this is the *best* take on this subject i've seen, by far
@mox You would think that Elon is smart enough to think through his plans and come to that realization. But he’s an immature kid with too much cash in his hands (well, not so much now) and all he’s doing to try and fix his mistakes is… acting impulsively. This isn’t going to work.
@zkat @SteveCooke @aurynn oh no, are we calling them hexagons? This is not fair to the noble 6-sided polygon.
@gerwitz @zkat @aurynn @SteveCooke Hexagons are the people who get a hexagonal avatar frame on birdsite rather than a circular frame, as the site recognizes that their avatar is associated with a known NFT.
@clacke @zkat @aurynn @SteveCooke I got the reference, and it’s clever. But I also have a lot of (not crypto) projects with hexagons so it makes me sad 😉
@SteveCooke yeah defederation is a profoundly important feature. creating a meaningful "level" between the individual and the network, in mastodon's case the server, is very powerful!
@SteveCooke on @Mastodon everyone can have their weird corner/cliche and not force their weirdness down everyone’s throat. Like that 👍
@NoobMLDude @SteveCooke @Mastodon it's like when one community of people hung out at that coffee shop and another at that bar. No need to have everybody stuck in the same place. (but if you *want* to move over its much easier here)

@SteveCooke

even better: being on an instance where a) they don't tolerate sign-ups from folks like that b) they tend to block those sites before you even think of picking up the Whack-a-Mole club

@SteveCooke please dm that server so I can save some time
@SteveCooke
You seem grumpy - and I totally dig that 🤣 Mastodon is legit awesome
@SteveCooke one of my favourite things to do is blocking crypto bros.
@SteveCooke why didn't they stay on twitter with their idol ?
@SteveCooke I was explaining exactly how this was possible to my sibling!
@SteveCooke 1000%. one of the best features masto has is having a button for "block this person AND their friends"
@SteveCooke As someone who hates everything related to bitcoin, "crypto", web3, NFTs and all the related grift - I LOL'd, and that's worth a follow!
@SteveCooke Yup, that the greatest feature of mastodon.
@SteveCooke Isn't it grand! To be utterly honest I hadn't realised that there was an instance for that. But I guess there is one for all kinds of folk.
I saw this video presentation from a conference only yesterday, about how decentralised socmed is much better at isolating bad actors (and whole instances), it was fascinating! Fills me with hope that the Fediverse is the future. Here's hoping anyway.
@SteveCooke
If you want to see the video I mentioned (it's really good), here is the link:

I think it may be from 2020 or 2021. It's basically about these gab people who wanted to take over but got defederated. So they gave up a year later. Hardeharhar.
Decentralized Social Networks vs. The Trolls

PeerTube
@SteveCooke that there's a terf instance and you can just block it entirely
@SteveCooke what’s the domain, asking for a friend :)
@SteveCooke let’s not give weirdos a bad name. crypto ghouls are grifters. they’re grifters.
@SteveCooke Similarly, instances like m.o and m.s are often blocked by admins at the instance level because of the large number of users and poor moderation
@SteveCooke it goes both ways too.
blockchain gangs can block the crypto developers that don't want anything to do with their ponzi scheme and just want to protect our data now and in the future.
@SteveCooke federation does have its own issues but this is not one of them. It’s so much easier to block large swaths of toxic people at once because they flock to their own spaces
@SteveCooke if... Uhh... If an admin were wanting to block said domain..... What would it be?
