If only there were several thousand highly-skilled professionals suddenly available who know how to improve a Twitter-like app
@scottjshapiro ideally some who might be highly motivated to make car man not get a good ROI on his new toy
@Pwnallthethings ngl, when i saw your avatar earlier today on this site i thought that it had a fighting chance.
@scottjshapiro as recently as *checks notes* two days ago, I thought it wasn't going to work as a platform. But there's actually people posting here now, not just parked accounts. So it has a fighting chance
@scottjshapiro the thing car man never understood was that Twitter was always about community, not number of followers or checkmarks. If a new community grows here, that's more than enough.
@Pwnallthethings @scottjshapiro it's like the console wars of the '80s and '90s. It doesn't matter how good your hardware is if you don't have enough games no one's going to buy it.
@Pwnallthethings Right, it feels like finding friends in a foreign country. Right now I feel like an expat, but soon it could be feel like home. Who knows, but I don't feel trapped there because there is an alternative
@scottjshapiro @Pwnallthethings I think there are a couple tools that use the Twitter API to search for corresponding accounts on Mastodon.

@Travelbuddha @scottjshapiro @Pwnallthethings I used this to find a bunch of folks. It's not perfect, but it's a start.

Debirdify

This is a web app that helps you find out which of the people you follow on Twitter are on Mastodon/in the Fediverse already and follow all of them easily.

@scottjshapiro @Pwnallthethings Hiring a staff would ruin one of the best things about mastodon - no ads, no promoted posts, no advertisers, no monetizing at all.
@Pwnallthethings @scottjshapiro There was that moment in 2005/2006 when Twitter felt new, fresh, exciting…Getting those vibes now from Mastodon. Feels strange to look forward to a *new place* but nice to see familiar faces.
@eclipxe @Pwnallthethings @scottjshapiro I'm just thrilled that people could come together to take a stand against a billionaire who thought he owned us.

@eclipxe @Pwnallthethings @scottjshapiro It would be legit cool for Mastodon to get big out of this. A democratized place where anyone can publish without the threat that someone richer than them can just wreck it one day.

It's also a little funny that it's happening less due to that technical merit and more just because it's best at scratching that Twitter itch.

@eclipxe Don't forget to setup your profile. You'll get more follow backs.
“Hello. My name is [former employee]. You killed my platform. Prepare to die!”
@scottjshapiro Not sure ex-Twitter folks want to work on an open source project specifically. But others have forked Mastodon and implemented their own version — i.e. Counter Social and the surrounding controversy.
@scottjshapiro i mean, who would they get to lead the thing? if only there was an entire executive team suddenly available too. But probably too much to hope for...

@scottjshapiro

Now hiring: $7.99/hr starting wage.

@scottjshapiro I mean, the thought had crossed my mind. If anyone needs a CA startup lawyer who’s focused on building social media growth companies for the past couple decades… 😇
@scottjshapiro they know where to find the code and submit pull requests.
@scottjshapiro well, yeah, but they just lost their jobs. They're probably going to focus first on finding something with a paycheck.
@scottjshapiro that will soon be happening. Voluntary donations to finance their creations. #Mastodon #resources
@scottjshapiro I'm definitely missing the years of polishing Twitter put in to how it batches notifications and shows replies beneath a post.
@scottjshapiro stopping crosspostings from twitter would be a good start.
@scottjshapiro most of them are probably more worried about their next paycheck though.
