Consider this the #mastodon missing-toot-#timeline-#cheatsheet
(not mine, and I whish I'd seen it earlier when I did).

BTW if you're looking for a simple and imho intuitive #androidclient @Tusky really nails it!

@remcoboerma @Tusky
Thanks!
So, this is how that works.
Many people are new on this plattform so the need for explanaitions like this is big. I am still a bit bewildered, but all in all this is fun.
@hakonwaage @Tusky indeed, I've been a causal user for some time and the fediverse has been a great resource of fun, valuable information and comraderie. But somethings are somewhat complex, like learning to think in a federated/decentralized way. So when a friend joined yesterday I looked at this with fresh eyes again, but now with the knowledge acquired over the last few months. This image stood out because of its clarity and I shared it with him, and you all.
@remcoboerma @Tusky @captsingh I found this chart best explains where toots go. Better than I could in text πŸ˜…
@remcoboerma @Tusky Thanks a lot for the chart. This is what I tried to figure out myself for some time now.

@remcoboerma @Tusky I dropped a wall of text to explain this to someone on discord earlier and wish I'd seen this toot to link them instead because of how helpful and clear this is. Thank you.

I did go back and link it anyway, in case my adhd informed rambling left then confused.

@remcoboerma @Tusky @ondra

So it makes sence to change the instance?!

@AngieRadtke @ondra
Sure thing. Change, or add. It's not quite uncommon to have several accounts on different servers to access different local timelines that are interesting to you.

@remcoboerma @Tusky

Thanks for sharing - this is one of the most important things people need to understand moving over from #musker.
I found the graphics here super useful and more legible:

https://axbom.com/mastodon-tips/

@remcoboerma Have you tried the Mastodon app? How do they compare?
@matt nope, tried the Mastodon web interface and some Linux desktop apps and I found it too overwhelming. Guess I didn't bother the android Mastodon app.
Right now I use tusky, husky and fedilab simultaneously to find my best fit.

@remcoboerma Flow chart: What makes up each timeline?

Public toot by @Foo:
Am I following @Foo?
If yes, then the toot shows in "Home" timeline.
If no: Is @Foo on my instance?
If yes, then toot shows in "local" timeline.
If no: Does someone on my instance follow @Foo?
If yes, then toot shows in "Federated" timeline.

If no: Did someone on my instance boost @Foo's toot or search for it with its URL?
If yes: toot shows in "Federated" timeline.
If no: @Foo's toot never reaches my instance.

There is some text next to the flow chart:
To look at it from the other direction: Your public toots will always be in your instance's local timeline.

If even one person from example.instance follows you, your public toots will be visible in the federated timeline for everyone on example.instance. (Replies don't make it into the public or federated timelines!)

If you choose "unlisted" instead of "public", your toots will be seen by followers and be visible on your profile but they won't appear in the timelines.

@dasnessie Thank you so much for transcribing, i felt bad i didn't do so on image upload. But saw no means of doing it afterwards. This however is very practical :)
@remcoboerma @Tusky thanks it was really useful to know how this works.
@remcoboerma @Tusky but what about favorites and boost counts. I notice that when you see the same post from different instances the favorites and boost counts are different. Does your instance only count the favorites and boosts that came from the instance?

@dmb677
Great question, and I truly don't know how boosts and faves propogate through the network. It seems to me that differences can be due to software incompatibility, different opinions and settings and eventual consistency.

I've heard about the loads of background tasks that are performed by a Mastodon server. I assume processing faves and boosts are some of them. Many tasks may be delayed for hours due to recent server overloads.

I noticed my counts whent up on federated boosts.
@Tusky

@remcoboerma @Tusky thanks for sharing this. Helps a lot understanding my timeline
