Hello #astrodon! I feel like I just walked into a party, and I don’t know anyone. So here’s my #introduction: I’m an astronomer at UC Santa Cruz where I’m growing an astrobiology program and studying exoplanet demographics using data from Kepler, TESS, Keck, and JWST.
@nbatalha wanna hang out awkwardly by the food table with me? 👋
@amyfou HAHAHA… THank goodness. Yes! I’ll grab the drinks!
@nbatalha oh thank goodness it was getting really lonesome over here -
@nbatalha Welcome to the party. Whats your position on life on mars (the bowie song not the scientific evidence for it)
@nbatalha Hi! Though I'm just an astro fan, I expect to be in Santa Cruz next Wednesday and would like to say hello if our schedules permit. I'd also like to introduce you to a friend who works on the SOFIA mission at NASA Ames.
@johnlogic Hi! Wednesday’s are usually my work from home day, but I’ll let you know if that changes. I know many of the SOFIA folks from my days at Ames. Who is it?
@nbatalha Do you know Michael Gross?
@nbatalha So many cool people joining Fedi! Welcome!
@nbatalha Santa Cruz is such a beautiful campus!
@nbatalha I feel the same. I feel like Wolowitz on Big Bang. I’m only a lowly engineer with a masters and everyone else has a PhD…except Penny
@nbatalha Yay Santa Cruz! I lived there from 2014-2020 (not affiliated with the university) and loved it. Hoping to move back some day. 😢
@nbatalha Welcome astro from beautiful Santa Cruz! You may find local communities with common interests at some of the science oriented servers (you can have more than one). I personally like qoto.org (robust server and very active), fediscience.com (verified published scientists), and mathstodon.xyz (all manner of math nerds).
@nbatalha - I'm also here in Santa Cruz. I'm have nothing to do with astronomy or physics (I'm a computer networking type) but I know people who you probably work with at UCSC and who have mentioned astrobiology. I just listened with my jaw kinda of hanging open in wonder.
