I thought the whole #fedi thing would be more fun, servers and instances like an archipelago, with a spread of island bobra and cultures. Different e ologies developing, #galapagos style.

In the end it’s just names next to nicks. Some sound interesting but thats it.

Am I missing something, dear #fediverse?

@alek So far I've found it difficult to wade through it. I realize it's not meant to be as much a user-friendly one-stop-shop experience as Twitter, but so far I've not found an instance that seems like I could call it home yet and I'm still just kind of overwhelmed.

Still, I'm no less motivated to get away from the standard conglom-o social media. Something's gotta give sooner or later, I think, or hope.

@LeoKirke I share the sentiment and motivation!

and regarding the instances, that's my question, are they really offering different experiences?

or are they just a technical, almost bureaucractic aspect of the #fediverse: in order to be here, you need to pick a server.

I'm hoping it's the former, but feels for now like it's the latter.

@alek I think you are, as long as you stick around on the Big Instances. If you're on smaller servers you can actually read and follow the Local feed, and have a sense of community in a way that is genuinely different.

@alek

You're missing out by being on mastodon.social which is so huge that its local timeline is a firehose.

Smaller servers can have more interesting local timelines which are much easier to read. This works especially well if the instance is well-moderated and has a specific theme or culture.

For example film enthusiasts might enjoy the local timeline on https://laserdisc.party.

Another option to try might be Fedi platforms that allow server-only posts, such as HomeTown and Glitch. This allows posts that are aimed totally at the server's community, and might help give a more village-like feel?

LASERDISC 💿 PARTY

Welcome to laserdisc.party, a movie-flavoured instance home to friendly video store chitchat and general bonhomie.

@alek I haven't wrapped my head around how federating works but even the known network / global timeline seems to be different on smaller instances
@jonossaseuraava I also haven't warpped my head around this! And I think that this is something that should be easy on a network that wants to be more fair / honest to its users.
I'll try to find out more, but for now this feels like a problem with lack of documentation, especially non-technical one, that seems typical for many #floss projects
@alek No, I don't think so. Servers make a difference for making your account, not for your day to day use. The whole point is that you just use it to follow whoever you want without the technical details being in your way except as names next to nicks.
@Gargron The choice of a server does make a lot of difference for day to day Mastodon experience. It influences the effective (not theoretical) circle of people you are among. Of course, one can follow whomever one wants but my experience is that the choice of a server determines a lot. I'm not a power user. Your experience may be different, of course. @alek
@alek It sounds basically like you're trying to use this communication tool as a television network. Different servers are different, because they contain different people. It's not like tourism, though. Nobody will give you a lei on arrival.
@alek thank you for your recent techpolicy.press article explaining the evolution of the #fediverse and #Eugen's role ("person-institution") and the finances of it all. Is there anyone working on the #mechanismdesign of #mastodon and #activitypub ?
