My darling #NZTwits, a reminder that after the initial burst of energy as you explored Mastodon, you'll be drawn back to Twitter. You're addicted, I'm addicted, Twitter wants us to stay that way by making us endlessly upset.

Make a mindful effort to pop in here once a day at least to toot something, or boost something. You're actively building community now, and it matters for the future.

Twitter has somehow become the international commons forum, and I don't actually see that changing in the foreseeable. But you are part of a community that care about each other, and part of that is keeping this space alive.
@dznz the advocates, politicians and the journalist all actively use twitter. But with more activity and better tools #Mastodon could easily become a better platform.
@stateless before this latest influx we were using it as a kind of adjunct to the big community: a quieter, safer spot to deepen relationships. Even if the UX weren’t to get massively better (mobile is a particular sore spot) I can confirm it’s good for this.
@dznz the local timeline is probably good for community discussion, but seems a but tricky to explore global topics. One good (and bad) aspect of the twitter algorithm is it both put interesting tweets in your timeline, and allowed some form of personal conversation with your closer network. Mastodon seems a little further back on UX development.
@stateless yeah, hard out. I do miss the international chaos that forced its way in sometimes.
@dznz the distributed nature of Mastedon is cool. It's interesting to think about networks like Fidonet and Usenet. 😀
@stateless yeah I think that’s part of why it feels like a throwback to those of us who’ve been around.
@dznz is there a list of admins? Was just trying to figure out how to search toots. But looks like it requires some optional services.
https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/optional/elasticsearch/
Full-text search - Mastodon documentation

Setting up Elasticsearch to search for statuses authored, favourited, or mentioned in.

@stateless you are correct. Your admin is Idanoo (the signed-out landing page should list the related admin for each instance), and the two mods for your instance that I can remember off the top of my head are @ explorergrace and @ swansinflight (not tagging as it’s likely to get lost in the rest of the mess this weekend, but worth raising maybe in a day or so?)
@dznz @stateless On the web view, there's also an 'about this server' text link at the bottom left, which gives you that info without logging out. :)
@dznz @stateless I joined here in May, and that’s exactly what I’ve been doing. Using this as a place to rest, a safer place to explore.
@dznz actually, it's quite good here, and I don't miss Twitter much. Only snag is when some pals are still there
@dznz just like with everything it takes time to change a habit. But breaking away from the habit of following the algorithm will do more for your mental health than you can realise before you start the journey!
@dznz
If you're like me, at one point you just stop going back to Twitter.
@dznz I've found it helpful to reduce it's effectiveness as a stimuli. I use tweetdeck and don't see algorithmically selected tweets. I scrolled through my feed and started unfollowing every account I saw that I didn't consider a friend, an acquaintance, a peer. For some of that culled stuff I used Nitter to make an RSS feed of it, so at least the stimuli isn't attached to twitter directly. Now when I check twitter, there's maybe 1-2 tweets for every hour since I last checked. No stimulation.
@dznz I don't know, I left twitter in 2015 or thereabouts and have not been tempted to go back... but maybe I have commitment issues... maybe.

@dznz Mastodon changed my pereption of Twitter - browsing Mastodon replenishes my mental energy, it's relaxing.

My feed here somehow creates a distance to the tabloid-ish firehose that is Twitter. The bird site tries so hard to be overwhelming it's become outright amusing - something I was unable to see pre-Mastodon.

Peeking at Twitter feeds has become less stressful, and more of a wry-smile-with-raised-eyebrow thing. I do it less, and for shorter periods of time.

@dznz I gave up on Twitter years ago but I'm now thoroughly addicted to Mastodon. Lucky me!
@dznz the best way to get around this is to be suspended from twitter 😌😂

@Megapope 😂😅

Related, your turnip-slapping legacy came up again in the last few weeks on the ol birdsite. So, gone but not forgotten.

@dznz bwahahaha kia ora 😂
@dznz I recommend the life enhancing action of removing Twitter from your phone. Leave it on other devices so you can still get your fix, but make it that little bit less convenient. This is advice independent of Mastodon adoption but for the addicted, Mastodon can function like methadone.
@dznz I deactivated my account to avoid this exact problem
@ada 🤘🏼hardcore!
@dznz After experiencing this, I actually feel no Twitter temptation. I made one last post about what a breath of fresh air Mastodon is, and that was it for me.
@dznz I hear that 💯% and I'm going to try to continue to do the same. I'm also probably going to cross post certain items if they're relevant here.
@dznz I'm coming back to this thread because it feels like a timely reminder. Even as Twitter implodes, there's something a wee bit special about how it worked. It'll be very hard to let go. Building community is something that requires effort... and now maybe the pain building on the bird app will make it feel like today is the day to do this.
@dznz My first day on Mastodon, it feels more old school, almost like a discussion group, that may be good, building a network is key, it'll likely take a while.
@keripaekakariki no rush! And sing out to me or one of the others you see welcoming folks on #NZTwits if you get stuck on something.
@dznz it will be as good as we make it here . Still feeling my way around, I’ll get used to it
@dznz
That's exactly how it feels at the moment.
@dznz or pop back and realise it’s an even bigger trash fire. My timeline is actual garbage.

@dznz I'm okay with the lack of outrage :)

I do miss some of the people and the communities I have in the bad place.

@dznz
You are so right about automatically heading to twitter. With the elections here in the US it was extra bad for a couple days. I keep reminding myself I'm looking for the people I follow to be coming here, and/or to look around for them here.
Building better habits!

@dznz Or just go cold turkey. I'm mentally healthier and getting more work done after quitting twitter.

The fediverse now has more than enough going on to entertain/inform me, and most of the people I really cared about on the other place are here now.

@dznz or just delete your account? it's quite relaxing
@dznz One hundred percent support trying to build this platform. I don’t understand that experience on Twitter though. I’ve curated my experience over there so that the vast majority of the time it is my happy place and friendly online community.
@dznz NOT ME .. I did go back once or twice but most of the content was vacuous and the ads hurt my brain. I'm just going to hang here until everybody moves over.
@dznz this was such good advice I’m slowly spending longer here.
@styler oh that’s wonderful to read! So glad to have you here with us! 🥰
