New iOS app release is waiting for Apple review! It adds a community timeline and fixes sign-up errors not being shown and servers being listed in the wrong order during onboarding.
@Gargron Community timeline is a huge addition!
@Gargron falls du Beta Tester für die iOS Version brauchst stehe ich gerne zur Verfügung 😀

@Gargron is there also a community feature request/bug report interface/repo for the app?

I’d love if my notifications didn’t show up with the entire full-size post for each notification. They’re just SO BIG 😅

@b_cavello Yes! Everything we do can be found through github.com/mastodon. That is a common complaint, I'll bump it up with the designers.
@Gargron ah! I didn’t realize it was all in one spot. How handy. Thank you so much!
@Gargron @b_cavello Kind of related: I do love the iOS app’s approach to CWs (the big, bold, centered text) and I do see the argument for keeping the post size intact (I assume to give an indication of post length) but it really does take up a lot of room if you’re trying to scroll past a CW’d thread that’s several posts long. (Unrelated dislike: the app insists on switching my posts to followers-only.)
@bix @b_cavello Hi, that's probably because your account is set to require follower approval. That sets your default posting visibility to followers-only.
@Gargron But it doesn’t happen that way in the web interface. I have my settings to default public posts and that’s always what the posting form is set to when I go to post.
@Gargron create an auto translate button and an option to show more "touts" from accounts front other instances that we follow worldwide, in Android app . Thanks
@Jorge_Irraizoz
I use Fedilab (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.fedilab.android), it has an auto translate button, and u r always, with only one click at the profilpicture, away from reading all posts on that account.

@Gargron great news, thanks for all the hard work🎉🥳🎊🍾
@Gargron Thank you for your work. Is there any way to support you? I'm new here and would really like to know, technical, marketing or simple monitary?
@Gargron federated when
Even would be cool if toots would appear in an hour or 30 minutes so moderators can do their work
@Gargron pinging @steinloa. Community (local) timeline is coming to the official Mastodon app. :)
@Gargron is it normal that language filters don't work? I still see toots in other languages in public timelines.
@Gargron May be a stupid question but what is « community » exactly ? How does it select what it shows ? :) Thanks !
@Bluewall It is most recent posts from people who are also using your Mastodon server
@Gargron maybe theres something I don’t understand but I’m on mastodon.online and I see month old post at the top ?
@Bluewall That's strange, I cannot reproduce this. Do you have any language filters set up?
@Gargron Okay so I'm very sorry, I have NO idea why I had that checked. Thank you ! and sorry....
@Gargron If we’re talking about v1.4.0 then I just received the updated app. 👍
@Gargron Community timeline is a must for me. So glad for this addition.
@Gargron yesss community timeline

@Gargron i feel like "instance timeline" makes more sense than "community timeline"

like, the whole point is building a community, is it not ?

@violet I'm not sure how A follows from B here. It sounds like your last paragraph is in favour of naming it community timeline. (Also, "instance" is an outdated term. We've been using "server" for years now)
@Gargron @violet
that was not how i understood the situation.
as i understand things...

instance is the individual and server is the type.

server being 'misskey', 'mastodon', etc...
instancing being 'stop.voring.me', 'mastodon.social', etc...
@logan @violet No, Mastodon and Misskey are software, and mastodon.social is a server. Instance is object-oriented-programming jargon, and while server is still a technical term it's a lot more ubiqutous. And I'm steering away from local for the same reason: localhost is not familiar to most people.
@Gargron @violet
ok so me and you have very much differing understandings than, i think this is fine though of course.

this is how i see it...

yes servers are software but
mastodon and misskey are servers and mastodon.social is an instance of mastodon server.

and the object-oriented part is correct to my understand but not necessarily the programming.
instance really just means 'one of' in a sort of way.

to say an instance of maston server is to say one of mastodon servers.
@logan @violet You are correct in understanding where the initial nomenclature comes from, but I am explaining to you why we do not use those words anymore. (I've also been here for a long time and never heard anyone refer to "Mastodon" as a server, although it is server software)
@Gargron @violet

it's the wording i would use, it makes things match up very nicely with other services.

gmail is an instance of email server.
for example.
you probably missed when i explained to someone using this terminology but this is understandable , you cannot be in all place always.
@logan @violet Your bio says you are a programmer, please understand that you may have a bias in which words you find intuitive to understand.
@Gargron @violet
I do more than just programming but i do see the point.

but what i find intuitive does not really change the words.

@Gargron i meant that "community timeline" doesn't sell the idea that it's the server that you signed up on because community could also refer to mastodon or the fediverse as a whole

i feel like "instance timeline" or "server timeline" make that more clear

@Gargron when are you adding local and federated time lines?
Otherwise the app is kinda useless for most people.
@Gargron tfw google approves apps faster than apple
@koyuchan @Gargron
yes, it's much faster when you don't properly check everything.

*looks in the direction of all the "battery improvement" apps*
@Gargron nah , i am good with the progressive web app
@charlie39 @Gargron does the progressive web app work with iOS though?
It’s my main gripe with using iOS.
@Ombra @Gargron progressive web app ( WPA ) is basically the frontend you get while logging in from a smartphone browser. Here's a screenshot. It is web based so yeah it should work in any smartphone with a decent browser

@charlie39 @Gargron
I use PWAs on MacOS.

You can install them with all browsers except Safari.

But on iOS you can install them only with Safari:

I didn't know this until you said it, thanks for pushing me to take a look.

I didn't realise iOS supported PWAs yet.

Progressive Web Apps, or PWAs, offer a way to turn app-like websites into website-like apps. Browsers are beefing up support for these useful hybrids, and we show you how to install and use them.
