Will this replace Twitter Twatter? Brilliant! I hope so. Who owns it?
@Siencyn no-one - this server (toot.wales) is owned by @jaz, but Mastodon is a de-centralised network of nodes. It’s, um, complicated.
@Siencyn it’s worth looking at @jaz’s recent timeline, he’s been posting lots of “finding your feet on Mastodon” type things

@nic @Siencyn ever so nitpickingly technically... I don't own but I am the current admin. We have several moderators who can succeed me in case I die/disappear/become a secret agent and the entity itself is a non profit corporation with a (small) board of unpaid directors its own funds and bank etc.

I nitpick so it's clear you can trust that the service will be around a long while, that i am not 100 percent autonomous, and that I cannot be bought out.

@jaz @Siencyn Diolch for that. That’s not nitpicky at all, I was just wrong!

@Siencyn
Croeso cynnes!

This @jaz could help with your question. 😊

@anniemo71 @Siencyn #shwmae bawb! We are certainly an alternative to Twitter and as you can probably tell there's quite the #TwitterMigration happening right now.

This service is provided by Toot Wales Inc., a registered non-profit. It uses a global social networking standard called #ActivityPub, which is an open Web standard for communicating across various services (unlike proprietary corporate systems)

I am writing this using the #Mastodon software service.

@anniemo71 @Siencyn As a provider, Toot Wales offers Mastodon, #Pixelfed and a blog platform, all of which "speak" ActivityPub. Pixelfed is a photo-sharing service, similar to Instagram but again, open and standards-based.

This all means you can use ANY provider to communicate with ANY service, so Mastodon users can subscribe to Pixelfed members for example.

It all just works, you own your data, no algorithms, and you can move accounts at any time.
