Heather L. Gilbraith's Horse Drawing Workshop - Notes and References Booklet

Back in April 2018 I taught a workshop on drawing horses for a friendly group of artists and comic folks in the Alaskan wilderness. These are the visual notes and tips I developed for that class.Horses are hard to draw, there's no getting around it. I created these notes with the hope of demystifying these glorious creatures for artists everywhere. This PDF features 19 pages of tips, breakdowns, simple anatomy explanations, and references that will hopefully make your drawing life a whole lot easier. Page 1: Cover. Pages 2-13: Hand drawn and written notes and advice. Pages 14-19: Photographic references from our pal Muybridge with notes.This PDF gives direction and advice on:Skeletal structureHow to simplify horse anatomyHow to depict a horse in perspectiveHow to study photo referenceDepicting a horse in motionHorse headsHorse emotionsHorse legsHorse hoovesSome common mistakes to watch out forReferences of different gaits (from our good pal Muybridge)…while trying to remain approachable and easy to understand.Thank you so much for your support!Examples of some interior pages:A detailed horse skeleton with comparative anatomy labels.Examples of how to think of a horse's anatomy in perspective.Examples of how to "block out" a pose and study horse anatomy from reference photos.Examples of how to draw a horse head and ears.

Thank you so much for boosting this, @stevelieber! I really appreciate it!

@Rheall

Thank you.

I may just find myself horsing around in a little while.

@Rheall horses and their crazy hands 👐
@Rheall This is perfect, thank you! :D
@Rheall Fantastic stuff, and nice to see a familiar face while checking out Mastodon. I was always the worst at drawing horses, something about the thick body and the skinny legs lol. But I never bonded with a horse, maybe that's part of it. I don't really draw anymore, I think those days are over. - Verena/Asynjur

@Jamellica Oh gosh, Verena!! It's so good to hear from you, welcome to the Fediverse!  I hear you about the not drawing anymore… I suffered some major burn-out a few years ago and I'm still trying to get over it. I haven't had a regular drawing practice for years now.

I'm looking forward to seeing your posts in my feed. Thank you for reaching out and saying hi! 🥰

@Rheall I'm still getting a feel for the place, and how I'd like to use it. Given my frustrations with Facebook and the situation on Twitter, seems like a good idea to get settled in somewhere else. And it's so good to see you!
@Rheall Great help with horse art. #equineart
@Rheall This is great and you should share it with https://www.themanequest.com/ . The website is run by a friend of mine and I figure she would be *delighted* to spotlight it.
