Hello Academic Tooters (#AcaTooters), as promised, this is my first thread for desi academics (thought not limited to) who want to connect with each other in this new space, and create a virtual support system. Please introduce yourself under here with your name, field, area of research, geographical location (optional). Once we have the thread going, I'll create a list.
Will be also holding future threads on conference, publishing, writing, and other #AcaWoes you can think of.

To start of, this is Paridhi, I am a final year PhD student bases in Delhi, working on aesthetics of feminist movements in India.

@Paridhigupta

Hi and welcome.
I don't really understand you PhD, what is your problematic exactly?

@LienRag hi, it's about how can one look at women's movements, and learn from them

@Paridhigupta

Sorry, I don't understand, why "aesthetics" then?

@LienRag because I look at the aesthetics produced within protest and of protest to look at them

@Paridhigupta

Feel free to not answer if I'm bothering you, but I still don't understand your problematic.
How do you look at them? Why do you look at these aesthetics? In what perspective?

@LienRag I use the visuals as an empirical data to look at the aesthetics of the movement through the perspectives of social movement and visual theories.

@Paridhigupta

I never heard about visual theories, would you be kind enough to elaborate?

@LienRag it's an entire field of study. You can start by reading works of WJT Mitchell, Roland Barthes, Gillian Rose, Rancier.

@Paridhigupta

I have read a little bit of Barthes, but maybe not the parts that you think of?

@LienRag Camera Lucida by Barthes
@Prachow @shivam_janus_bahuguna @smeedha

@Paridhigupta @shivam_janus_bahuguna @smeedha
Hey. I’m Prachi and a final year PhD researcher in Economics. My thesis is based on international trade in Latin America. Other research interests include geopolitics and digital economy.

Nice to meet you, Fellow Academics! 💛

@Prachow hey Prachi, thanks for the introduction! Hope you find some like-minded people here :)
@Paridhigupta hello! :) i'm upasana, currently in my final year of masters in development studies. i'm interested in science and tech studies, labour and information studies. i'm based out of chennai right now and i'm looking forward to applying for grad school in the next couple of years!
@ub395 that's really nice upasana. Have you thought of your proposal? Also any comment on what would you want to know from academic threads?

@Paridhigupta not yet. i'm working on my masters thesis right now and i'm hoping that gives me more insight into narrowing down my areas of interests.

i'd like these threads to be spaces where we can share readings, opportunities and create a support system for conferences, universities, writing or fieldwork.

@ub395 great! That is some of the stuff I will cover in the following weeks. Meanwhile I'm going to add people onto the list. Also if you feel any discomfort from anyone on the list, please let me know. And that goes for anyone who joins
@Paridhigupta Hello, I am Hitesh Fulwani. I recently finished my master's in anthropology from LSE and am currently preparing my PhD application to train as a historian.
@HiteshFulwani Hi Hitesh, welcome to the acatooter thread. Please let me know if there's something specific you would like to be featured in the threads? Also how is the proposal going?

@Paridhigupta Specifically, I am looking to collaborate with fellow students who are a part of some writing groups and work on improving my writing alongside them. In general, I am more than happy to be a part of every or any thread.

After months of soul-searching, I have finally decided to pin down on history because it has always piqued my curiosity since undergrad. Transitioning to another discipline is hard but I am working on it. Thank you so much for asking.

Hope you are doing well!

@HiteshFulwani thankyou Hitesh, and I can understand. Finding one's area can be exhausting. I've been jumping from Human development to sociology, and finally pinned at gender studies, though I think I still might move to visual studies after my PhD (crazy). And that's great! I also run a blog on writing in Delhi. If you want to be an author there, please DM me, we have just started that.

@Paridhigupta Yes, it is quite exhausting! Thank you so much for the invite but, I don't think I will have any time amidst my proposal. But I will let you know once I am in a position to do so.

Thank you so much.

@HiteshFulwani definitely! And yes, and for any help regarding the writing, give a shout out, that's what the academic community I'm trying to build is for, well one of the things atleast.
@Paridhigupta Absolutely. Thank you so much
@Paridhigupta #AcaTooters
Hi! I'm a lecturer in Applied Linguistics at the University of York
Am interested in all things to do with language😊 Look forward to interacting with other academics. Great idea to open this thread for a lot that often suffer from self doubt and feel like they are imposters #AcaWoes 😁😁
@murlal welcome to the thread :) I'm glad you liked the idea and joined. Imposter syndrome is infact the first thing I talked about, it's amazing how widespread it is, and so many of us go through it, feeling alone.
@Paridhigupta
Mujtaba.
NRC.
Delhi.
@Mujtaba hi Mujtaba, what's your area of research?
@Paridhigupta let me DM you?
@Mujtaba Sure, but also the point of this thread is so people know your research area atleast and can reach out to you in case they have similar interests.
@Paridhigupta I’m not a PHD scholar. I’m final year law student. I’m going Assam to research on NRC. I wish to research in this area only.
@Mujtaba it's okay, you don't have to be a PhD :) it's for anyone studying and in academia. And that's a very important area. Please let me know what kind of inputs would you expect from the academic thread?
@Paridhigupta Hello! I am Nandha. Doing my doctorate in physics in quantum sensing. At the moment, looking for fellow STEM academics here. Most of them are on Twitter still.
@ionhandshaker hi Nandha, welcome here. And yeah I get it, I hope you can find some people on the thread though :) which year are you in?
@Paridhigupta Just my first year.
@ionhandshaker okay, best of luck for the long road ahead :) also can you tell me what else would you like the threads to include?
@Paridhigupta Based on what I've observed so far, people get into mental health issues quite easily. Ways to ensure good mental health, while maintaining a research schedule would be great. Some Scicomm would be nice too. (if it's still within your area)
@ionhandshaker great, for the next thread, I was planning to do it on mental health, I am curating some stuff for that right now. Will open it within the coming week. And Scicomm is not my area, but I'm hoping this thread reaches more people, and we get some people from Scicomm with whom threads can be held :)
@ionhandshaker please do tag any more people within academia that you do know here :)
@Paridhigupta I found this instance called scholar.social. Could prove helpful.
@ionhandshaker that's great. Have you figured out how to be on multiple instances with the same userid?
@Paridhigupta You can. You have to sign in everytime using your email id. You can use your userid constantly across all the instances and you can interact across instances too.
@ionhandshaker any word on when scholar.social might be up again BTW? And what's the local timeline like there? 🤓
@AKanisetti Oh yeah. The server is up again. You should now be able to login.
@AKanisetti I think they'll accept requests soon. The local is very good. Although, slightly slanted towards the humanities. Sociology is the preferred subject of many.
@ionhandshaker sounds super cool, I'll apply again then!
@Paridhigupta I'm an aspiring research student (applied to PhD positions and waiting for the results). My area of research is Gandhian Studies, and now I'm specifically more into the ways Hindu-nationalists are appropriating Gandhi, and the limitations to the transfer of knowledge vis-a-vis the idealisation of Hindu-Rashtra. As of now, I'm attending conferences, presenting papers, speaking in radio, television, etc as an independent scholar.
@vishnuvaratharajan that's very interesting Vishnu. So are you looking at Gandhi's own works and comparing it with his Hindutva appropriation? How is it going being an independent scholar? Also this is a question I'm asking everyone, what kind of things would you like the threads to include?
@Paridhigupta no, I'm looking more into the Hindu-nationalist writings about Gandhi and the connection to and fraction from it. My methodology is still nascent - I'm right now thinking along the lines of Durkheim's Sociology of Knowledge to historicize the interpretation based on the author's sociological background. I'm also trying to bring Quentin Skinner's ideological methodology into this and observing the text in two levels - the semantic content and the intention. (1/2)

@Paridhigupta As an independent scholar, I get the feeling of an imposter even more frequently, lol :-((

Threads... Nothing comes to my mind particularly (I shall type when something hits me). As of now the very existence in an academic group gives a sense of solidarity and warmth 😅 (2/2)

@vishnuvaratharajan please do. And also a comparative methodology might be interesting for you to try. And imposter syndrome is such a common thing, there's a culture of over-productivity which especially leads to it. I would suggest to focus on your own work and not think of it in comparison to others. Research is not a race :)

@Paridhigupta #AcaTooters #introductions #india Hi! I'm Anirudh. I'm a geopolitics researcher and amateur historian. My focus area is the early medieval Deccan, c. 600-1100. I'm just generally interested in a lot of fields though so I'm looking forward to interacting with scholars and academics here and learning about their work!

(I'm also hoping to apply to Masters' or PhD programmes eventually and will be looking for guidance on how the application and funding process works)

@AKanisetti hi Anirudh, nice to have you here. Have quite a few historians here. The community is slowly coming together, which is good to see :) please be free to connect with anyone. Also if you need some specific guidance in applications, holler, I am going to have some threads on it in the future :) the next one is going to be on mental health. Super great for you to join.

@Paridhigupta Thank you so much for doing this! Looking forward to the thread.

(BTW I'd be super grateful for any reccommendations on historians to follow since I'm still trying to figure out how Mastodon works!)
