what's everyone's opinion on background noise while writing? Music, podcast, television? I'm definitely a music guy specifically lo-fi hip hop beats.
@Joncperson my kid is usually watching something or yelling about a toy, so, i'm pretty set on BG noise :D
@Joncperson No tv or podcasts for me; lyrics and words outside my head chase away the words inside my head. If others are around, I pop on my Beats 3 Solo and cancel ‘em out. I do listen to Focus tracks on Brain.FM and ambient tracks (Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Robert Rich). Extreme measures, but I’m extremely distractible.

@Joncperson I like writing in coffeeshops, especially in busy city areas. Gives a steady background white noise, sometimes with some relaxing music, but usually nothing in particular that stands out and catches my attention.

If I can't go anywhere though, there's plenty of pre-recorded ambient background noise on the internet.

@InvaderXan When I used to live in a bigger area I loved writing in coffeeshops and bars.
@Joncperson Quiet please. Or anything below the perpetual cicada shrill of my tinnitus. Country sounds. Distant traffic. But not speech or music, or I will give those 100% focus instead. It’s not a question of distraction. It’s more that that’s how I do something wholeheartedly. Unless it’s a mere technical activity, while I write creatively my senses seem to extend way beyond my body and I’ll feel it physically if anything jars me.
@Joncperson Not a fan. I used to think I was the kind of person who needed music at all times... turns out I'm not at all. If I really want to get stuff done, I have to give up the notion of multitasking and have as little distraction as possible. I can sometimes handle music without lyrics while writing, but I really do better with no music at all.
@gunsofchekhovia I get oddly stressed out when I'm writing in silence. Also, a lot of times I'll pick a type of music that fits the mood I'm trying to convey. I feel like I can take it in like osmosis and then push out a byproduct of the mood and my imagination combined.
@Joncperson I have a few playlists for writing, lo fi is good, no lyrics though for sure.
