For me, the long term consequences of an aging population, housing affordability, climate, and infrastructure deficits drive my views rather than the short term consequences, because my generation has to deal with both the short and long term. I know there's no good answer, but I offer this short thread constructively present my argument. And no I won't be asking people who can't afford housing to stay away from Victoria. /End #yyj #yyjpoli #yyjcc
It will take someone my generation around 20-30 years to save up for a down payment alone, we face a climate crisis, and our population continues to grow older with my generation left to carry the consequences of that. Even rapid immigration policies won't help. So the question is do we govern with patience and absolve ourselves of responsibilities by staying in our proverbial constructional lanes, or do we do something more? /3 #yyj #yyjpoli #yyjcc
Councillor Coleman was first elected in 1986, 2 years before I was born. I have no doubt that he brings immense life experience to the table and that's why he's well respected. From my own perspective (and mine alone), Coleman can ask for patience in trying to govern given where he is in his life, but my generation faces different timelines and huge obstables compared to those at the same point in their lives in 1986. /2 #yyj #yyjcc #yyjpoli
I was first introduced to Victoria politics by listening to the thoughtful discussion that Chris Coleman had on the Capital Daily podcast around politics versus governance. He's brought it up several times as the new council tries to navigate the priorities that lay before them for the next 4 years. His discussion on patience though is where someone like me and him would differ in opinion. /1 #yyj #yyjpoli #yyjcc
This quote from Councillor Hammond already dispels a lot of the unproductive commentary on the Bird site and radio. There's more learning and engagement involved than what's being discussed on a talk show. #yyjpoli #yyj #yyjcc #bcpoli
A neighborhood or city without the diversity of people and mixed incomes is as good as a dead neighborhood or city. #yyj #yyjpoli #bcpoli #yyjcc https://www.timescolonist.com/opinion/comment-you-should-live-where-you-can-afford-to-live-6302102
Comment: You should live where you can afford to live

Trying to shoehorn even more residents into an already crowded space is insanity.

I thought items like affordable housing, green spaces, inclusive forms of transportation, climate change, police/fire services, and encouraging local business growth were important city council topics, but I guess dedicating time to floating conspiracies on why city council is holding in-camera meetings on Missing Middle trumps all of that. #yyjpoli #yyjcc #yyj #VictoriaBC
Many of the Victoria neighborhoods will have a new community liaison with the big change on council. Tonight at the Victoria Downtown Residents' Association (and Harris Green), the board is meeting their liaison, Councillor Dave Thompson, for the first time. As opposed to any commentary on Birdsite, community associations are excited to meet the new council and start fostering new relationships. #yyj #yyjcc #yyjpoli #VictoriaBC
There is a difference between questioning in-camera meetings and how we can improve public access to council, versus constantly alluding to conspiracy theories and questions like "what are they hiding?". This is highly unproductive, particular for those who have a large platform to communicate. #yyjpoli #yyj #yyjcc #VictoriaBC

@ZebKing, do you know @DavidThompsonVIC - newly elected to #yyjcc? He's a friend and incredible mind/advocate/human being. #yyjpoli
