#YusefSalaam, speaking about how #Trump persecuted them said, “That man thinks that #hate is the animating force in America. It is not.”

#Trump never allowed that #TheExoneratedFive deserved a #trial before deciding they were guilty, telling reporters he wanted the city to hate them even as Mayor Ed Koch urged for calm.

Their stories take on greater meaning as Trump continues to insist he himself is being persecuted by the justice system.

Four of the five of the #TheExoneratedFive, formerly known as the “#CentralParkFive”, joined #TheRev #AlSharpton onstage.

Huge cheers for #YusefSalaam when he introduced himself as a #NYC councilman. “Forty-five wanted us un-alive," Salaam says of #Trump. "He wanted us dead.”

Those teenagers’ convictions were later set aside, & their confessions were found to have been coerced. One of those young men, #YusefSalaam, is now a #NYC council member. #Trump still insists he was right.

#Sharpton drew a sharp contrast between #Harris & Trump on the issue of #race, saying Harris has long fought for #RacialJustice while Trump cares about “sowing division.” This is one of the most direct discussions of #racism in America that I’ve heard at the #DNC.

"Even though Donald Trump wanted us executed even when it was proven that we were innocent, I do not take pleasure at today's verdict.

We should be proud that today the system worked. But we should be somber that we Americans have an ex-President who has been found guilty on 34 separate felony charges. And while today might not be as shocking as January 6th, it is equally profound.

On January 7th, a large majority of Americans agreed that Trump should never again lead this country.

Let us hope we wake up tomorrow with the same conviction.

We have to do better than this. Because we are better than this."

Exonerated 'Central Park Five' member set to win council seat as New York votes in local elections

An exonerated member of the “Central Park Five” is poised to win a seat on the New York City Council, decades after he was wrongly imprisoned in an infamous rape case. Democrat Yusef Salaam is running unopposed for the seat in one of many local elections playing out Tuesday across New York state. Salaam and four other Black and Latino men had their convictions overturned by DNA evidence in the 1989 rape and beating of a white jogger. Elsewhere in New York, local elections on Long Island could offer clues about how the city’s suburbs could vote in next year’s congressional elections.

Hi Trump.

#YusefSalaam, one of the exonerated “Central Park Five,” has won the Democratic #primary, all but assuring him a seat on the #NewYorkCity Council. It’s an improbable feat for a political novice who was wrongly accused, convicted and imprisoned as a teenager for the rape and beating of a white jogger in Central Park.

Wrongly imprisoned for 7 years, exonerated ‘Central Park Five’ member wins NYC Council primary

A member of the “Central Park Five” has won the Democratic primary for a seat on the New York City Council representing Central Harlem. The win all but assures Yusef Salaam of eventual victory. Ranked choice voting tallies Wednesday show him with nearly 64% of first and second-choice votes, making him the clear winner. Salaam prevailed over two political veterans: state Assembly members Al Taylor and Inez Dickens. Salaam was 15 when he was wrongly arrested in the rape and beating of a white woman jogging in Central Park in 1989. Salaam and four other Black and Latino teenagers were wrongly convicted and spent years in prison before they were exonerated.
