Rejecting speciesism means opposing all forms of discrimination against nonhuman animals. Antispeciesism includes, in addition to veganism, the defense of animal victims of natural harm.

An invertebrate is an animal without a backbone or spinal column. This includes a wide range of animals like insects, spiders, worms, octopuses, crabs, lobsters, shrimps, and squids. Many invertebrates display complex behaviors suggesting they are sentient, or capable of subjective experiences like pain and pleasure. However, there is still scientific debate about invertebrate sentience. We should give invertebrates the benefit of the doubt and aim to reduce any potential suffering they experience, given the vast numbers of these animals and the harm that could result if we incorrectly assume they are not sentient.
