did they at least clarify why it got cancelled?

If you have documentation of your intent to only cancel hosting and not the domain, it sounds like a breach of contract and it could still be worth trying to raise a dispute, or at the very least a public stink on various social networks (especially #WebHostingTalk forums (if they still exist) and Twitter could be worth raising awareness at).

I hope you don't have anything else with either #MediaTemple or #GoDaddy?
