SCC4Transit had a chance to talk with the man behind Equitable VMT Mitigation: Robert Swierk! This interview is full of great information about the project, and a great example of how much the folks at @vta care about the community.

Equitable VMT Mitigation: An Interview with Robert Swierk — SCC4Transit

Recently SCC4Transit had the pleasure of talking with Robert Swierk from VTA. Rob leads the Equitable VMT Mitigation project, which we’ve written about in the past . Rob kindly sat down for an interview to discuss the project, it’s current state, and what it might look like when it’s implemented.

8% of streets cause the majority of fatal crashes but does anyone understand that making those streets safe requires getting people out of cars? #VisionZero needs #VMTreduction, not flashing lights.
@garyshaff How does it make sense, under a #climateEmergency declaration, to prioritize the pavement maintenance of multiple redundant car lanes over the usability of bikes and transit? The existing funding is creating the problem, so it's simply absurd to try to fix it with more funding without changing the carway layout. Our miles-traveled is flat because we haven't added or removed car lanes, to get #VMTreduction we have to cut back on car subsidies. I'm already at #DefundDOTs and #BanCars.

#Portland #congestionPricing policy being updated in the metro Regional Transportation Plan, needs public comment supporting this #SafeStreets policy and a switch from car-centric measures to "new mobility policies based on system completeness, #VMTreduction, and reliability"

Basically since the moment #PBOT bulldozed the trees and widened 39th (now Cesar Chavez Blvd) to four lanes, residents have stories of how they & other kids were not even allowed to go near that street on their bikes. But the #Portland bureau of "#transportation" remains perplexed about how to solve the problem they created or how to make their budgets work 🙄 #Vision60or70Something #carsRuinCities #VMTreduction #BusLanes #RoadDiet #tacticalUrbanism #climateAction #jfdi

@capntransit With the #ClimateAction / emergency directives and adopted #VisionZero plans, I would expect to hear more about #VMTreduction from cities, and see DOTs optimizing for person-trips. Without some mandate to manage those two variables, all of the declarations and plans are hollow.
