#VenCo imagines a world where a burgeoning revolution of radical Black and Indigenous queer-led women & femmes is about to (in the next 17 days) come to fruition--or fail forever.

There's quests! Magic! Road trips! Historical tie-ins! Destinations! And a crocodile!

But...I also noticed the near total erasure of extant Indigenous politics and historical tie-ins. The white supremacist suffragettes of 1913 get a shoutout, but not the Haudenosaunee (from whom those women drew heavy inspiration).

I read a new book by of my favorite authors recently: Cherie Dimaline's #VenCo.

It's about witches and femme (but mostly woman-centered) liberatory magic and politics. I can tell it's meant to be antiracist, trans affirming, queer celebratory, culturally inclusive, and sex positive.

I wanted to love this book. I wanted it to be like The Marrow Thieves.

There's a lot in there to love, but the dissonance between the book's claimed politics and its narrative choices is too loud for me.

I’m listening to #VenCo by Cherie Dimaline. Dimaline’s writing is always fantastic. I am loving the characters, the settings, the word choices and cadences of the sentences, the rich exploration of women’s relationships and ways of loving and supporting each other. It is so soothing to my heart to come into a world like this, full of witches, which could so easily end up grossly cisnormative, but to trust the author and to have that trust rewarded. #amreading #bookstodon
The sort of novel I *never* get tired of. The inclusive witchy feminist variety. Women writers, just please keep β€˜em coming. #VenCo #CherieDimaline #fantasy #witches #bookstodon #amReading
I’m reading VenCo by Cherie Dimaline and it took me almost a third of the way through the book to figure out what the title meant. Oops. Sometimes I’m slow to catch on. @indigenousauthors #Indigenous #AmReading #witches #VenCo #CherieDimaline

Weekly thread of photos and commentary from our life.

1) Sunday, 22 January. Went down for a nice walk on this last day before term begins. It was a clear day. We had a good view of the islands, which look exceptionally tiny in this picture.

5) Bike rental kiosk. I wonder if it looks as bad on the inside as the park ranger booth did.

When we drive over to my son’s Dr appointment in East Ventura I saw that the roads and lots were open already.

And, of course, the sky is beautiful in this photo, too. :)

4) some of the mess and the clean up machines. I do not know what the crane is for, however. The roads and parking lots look like they will be ready by the weekend. The beach will take a lot longer. And if it rains again….
