#uTalk is one of those apps that teaches many languages with the same set of photo cues. They have one photo in the “adjectives” set that they use for both “young” and “old.” Unfortunately, for #Hawaiian (just like #Māori) the words for “old woman” and “old man” are distinct. So for this photo they correctly used “luahine” but the structure of the app prevents them from including “ʻelemakule” (old man)
@AspiringLuddite Many libraries in Sweden offer free access to #utalk, which also has a Swedish course. Haven't tested it, but doesn't look too bad. Is not for free tough, but your local library might offer access to it as well?
Normally I would use “kīloi” for throwing something away, and “kāpae” for “skip” or “cancel” (as in “Ua kāpae ʻia ke kaʻaahi” for “the train is cancelled”) but today I learned: “throw away” is also a meaning of “kāpae.” (Screenshot from #uTalk )
A little oopsie in #uTalk - the photo shows actors onstage so it’s meant to be “the THEATER theater, the one with live actors” but the text in #Hawaiian is ”ka hale kiʻiʻoniʻoni” (i. e. “the MOVIE theater”) #languageLearning #olelohawaii
I’ve started the Hawaiian “Alphabet” unit in the uTalk app. I’m disappointed that the voices give the name of each letter but the graphic only has the appearance of the letter itself, not the name. In contrast, the Greek course puts the Greek name of the letter in addition to the letter itself. #uTalk #hawaiian #greek #languageLearning #alphabet
@ElizabethLeeCo @linguistics is #UTalk any good in general??
I'm "learning" German in Duolingo but it would be great to have a better app
My first time in uTalk finding a flub. The Hawaiian written text for this exercise is “Hiki iā ʻoe ke ʻoka i kaʻa hoʻolimalima noʻu?” but both voice tracks say, “E kaʻa hoʻolimalima noʻu, ke ʻoluʻolu” (more like, “a taxi for me, please” - either is fine I’m sure, but they don’t match! #uTalk

So of course I should contact an actual human kumu, but since the machines are always so responsive...lol. I first asked Google Translate what it would use for "I donʻt know" and it responded exactly as uTalk has: ʻaʻole maopopo iaʻu. #googleTranslate #uTalk #hawaiian
In Hawaiian, I learned the word “maopopo” to mean “understand” so I would interpret “ʻaʻole au maopopo” as “I don’t understand.” I was a little surprised when in the uTalk app they also used the same world for “I don’t know.” #OleloHawaii #LearnHawaiian #olelo #hawaiian #uTalk
@elduvelle as far as I remember, I just downloaded #uTalk and the free trial just started, it was easy. At first you just get the one intro pack, but as you start using it, it gives you “uCoins” for different accomplishments, and you can use those uCoins to buy quite a few more packs. I used it for free for at least six months before I finally tossed it a little extra money to get some more packs. But the greatest thing is there are NO ADS in the free trial!
