IAS prelims pattern includes multiple choice questions which are based on general studies and analytical abilities. This exam tests the understanding skills of aspirant rather than memorizing ability. Prelims exam is for two hours duration and has two papers for 100 marks each. Both the papers have multiple choice questions. In IAS prelims difficulty level is more than mains because in prelims you have to choose the correct options, so you either know the answer or you don’t whereas in mains you have to write so even if you know the answer partially, you have something to write at least. In mains you have more control over the exam. There are people who clear the exam every year in one go and they have extracted some tricks and hacks which they share with other but many aspirants do not follow it and could not clear the exam even after many attempts. The syllabus and books for exam preparation are not limited and the syllabus and pattern can be changed anytime. So do not make yourself totally dependent on previous year’s pattern. There are chances that one does not read the question carefully and by reading familiar words he/she marks the answer and is confident about it. Whereas in actual there is a small catch in question which was not identified by the candidate and his answer is marked wrong.
