SESIMBRA, Portugal–Web Summit starts in Lisbon Monday evening, but I elected to fly out Friday night so I could be less woozy from jet lag during the event. With conference organizers paying for my airfare but only covering lodging from Monday on, I jumped on a cheap off-season rate at a Marriott property here, a lengthy commute from Lisbon, to enjoy some low-key seaside scenery. If you come to Sesimbra yourself, I endorse the long hike up a hill to the Moorish-vintage castle ruins overlooking the town.

11/7/2023: Bitwarden Adds Passkey Support, But Only in the Browser for Now, PCMag

I wrote this story off an advance copy of Bitwarden’s announcement Monday afternoon, allowing me to spend 15-plus hours Tuesday working as an Arlington election officer.

(Patreon readers got a recap of my Election Day experience, my first as a poll worker in which I helped voters with Virginia’s recently-added option of same-day registration.)

11/7/2023: 6G Summit brings unusual plea from carriers: Slow your roll, Light Reading

My trip to New York last week for the Brooklyn 6G Summit yielded this long piece, which leads off with an AT&T exec voicing thoughts that seemed almost disloyal to the business such as “We’re getting a little bit worn out with the economics of the industry.” So if you ever wondered if telecom executives got tired of the prevailing hype around each upcoming generation of wireless standards, I have good news: At least sometimes, they can be as sick of it as you probably are. I also appreciated having one conference speaker remind the audience that WiFi can be highly effective competition against plain old 5G, a possibility that too many 5G sales pitches have tried to hand-wave out of existence.

11/9/2023: Kids Hate Unwanted Messages, But Don’t Feel Helpless About Them, PCMag

As the dad of a 13-year-old, I had to cover this new study from the Center for Democracy & Technology that found teenagers annoyed by unsolicited input on messaging services, some of it gross to horrific, but not feeling powerless over it. I have yet to get my kid’s input on the CDT report, but asking for that feedback is on my list.
