Professor helps discover global gap in geologic record

About 34 million years ago, Earth began to cool dramatically, transforming the climate from greenhouse to icehouse and causing sea levels to fall. As more land was exposed to weathering forces, copious amounts of sediment likely sloughed off continents into the oceans, bound for the deep seafloor.

Weird CO2 trend today. The new tar roof is being installed so it seems that to reduce the smell in the building the fresh air supply has been turned off. It look a long time overnight for CO2 to deline and then was much higher when in my office then when in the classroom in another building.

It’s no Dig or even Altamira, but #Unconformity is a decent movie with more than a hint of #geology. In fact, it has more geology than just about any fictional movie I have seen.

Available on Prime and Tubi, it has much in the way of great scenery…enough plot to keep it going, and some sinister cut throat academician nonsense to give it some bite.

Only a few “Oh, hell no!”s and a nice peaceful slow burn movie to wind down with.

Pick up a hand sample of it and give it a spit.

This may be a good time to post this comparison of erosion rates... interestingly enough you don't need all that fast of a rate to get to 3-5 km exhumation, because combined Neoproterozoic glaciation lasts such a long time! #geology #unconformity

The Great Unconformity

Left to right on top of my notebook are:
Tapeats Sandstone deposited 525 million years ago in a beach environment.
Zoraster Granite emplaced 1.7 billion years ago.
Vishnu Schist 1.8 billion years ago.

Both of the bottom layers are the roots of mountains that eroded away.

Right where my foot is, the contact between the Tapeats and the Zoraster, there is over a BILLION years missing in the rock record called an unconformity. It was named the Great Unconformity by John Wesley Powell, and yes, you need to capitalize it.

These rocks can be seen at Frenchman's Stop in the Frenchman Mountains outside of Las Vegas, and also at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
