A Crossref applicant recently asked when they would receive their DOI prefix and login details to start registering their content after submitting their application form. The answer is…. It depends. In this post, I’ll give a bit more information about the steps involved in a membership application, where there might be delays in the process, and what you can do to help make your application as smooth as possible. Step one: Reviewing the application All applicants must complete a membership app...
Occasionally we get both members and metadata users asking us in tech support about how they can retrieve a list of DOIs that have been registered for a journal, book, conference, etc. There are a couple of ways to do this, depending on what your objective is. Let me explain. Using the REST API If you’re wanting to analyze records in bulk, the REST API is your best option. But depending on how the metadata was registered with us and the way in which we return results at the journal, book, and ...
DOI prefixes are usually assigned in order, but sometimes they take unexpected jumps or appear lower than before. Why? This month's membership ticket of the month explains it: https://tinyurl.com/3v4ycszk
February’s Membership Ticket of the Month comes from Samuel at one of Crossref’s sponsoring organizations, Cultural Hosting. Samuel noticed that last year we assigned a new sponsored member a DOI prefix in the 10.71000s. However, this year we assigned a different new member a prefix in the 10.63000s. Sponsors and other keen-eyed observers generally see that new prefixes are assigned sequentially, so Samuel wondered why Crossref is suddenly assigning lower DOI prefixes? To answer this question ...
Hello there! From time to time, applicants and members will ask if Crossref can customize or amend our membership terms for their organizations, or sign additional documentation. The short answer is: no, with a slight exception in cases of certain United States state entities, and organs of the United Nations and European Union. Before I explain further, let’s zoom out. Crossref is a nonprofit membership organization composed of around 20,000 members. When the representative of an organizatio...
Attention web deposit form users! Affiliations are not the same as organizations in metadata deposits. January support #ticketofthemonth explains why—check it out! https://tinyurl.com/32emzpjy
Hello, thanks for coming to the community forum and happy 2025. I’d like to start the year by going through a common mistake in interpretation of the metadata elements we accept in our schema, and that are partially available to deposit through the Web Deposit Form. The two elements I am referring to are affiliations and organizations. These are very similar but also very different at the same time. They can refer to establishments or groups which can represent an author’s relationship or conn...
Hello, I’m Robbykha from Crossref’s membership team. Happy New Year! Recently, we’ve had a couple of membership applications from organizations that have published content with DOIs already displayed, on an existing Crossref DOI prefix. However, when we tried clicking on those DOI links they did not resolve. Instead, we got a notification that “DOI not found,” such as https://doi.org/10.13003/unregisteredDOI. This indicates that these DOIs have not been registered with Crossref. Interestingly...
Every Crossref member has at least one assigned DOI prefix, and those prefixes are usually linked to a role credential or user-role credential(s). To make a successful deposit, the publisher who is depositing the DOI content should ensure that they include the correct deposit credentials when making the deposit, and these deposit credentials include the correct username and set password and need to have permissions against the prefix that the DOI is being registered against or the prefix agains...
