The guitar riff in Firestarter by The Prodigy is sampled from S.O.S. by The Breeders. I was a big fan of Last Splash when it came out, so I'm kind of surprised I never noticed. Pretty sure I wore out the tape rewinding and playing Cannonball, though....

#ThingsILearned at #InternetArchive: We have our own task queuing system. Like Celery or Amazon SQS but written in #PHP at least a decade before any of those. It has recently handled its task number 5 billion.

When you upload a file, the task system (called "catalog") will generate derivative formats, like OCRing books or transcoding videos. Some tasks have taken months to run end-on-end.

That's 'cos while lots of us took it, we don't hang out together much. (cough)

Oddly, geometry & trigonometry is one of the things I learned in high school that I still use to this day. It comes up in all kinds of software engineering that has no obvious connection to graphs, plots, GIS, or anything like that.

I frequently rely on this. I was once told never to do maintenance on a computer without supervision.

I wiped the OS and didn't make a boot disk before I did it.

I listen to a lot of radio. I guess I like voices.

Last week I heard an interview with this jazz singer who’s being commemorated with her own Canadian stamp.

She was so exuberant and upbeat in the interview. That I’ve never heard of her before is not so unusual, but she’s been around for a long while.

Eleanor Collins is 103.🎶

Despite having a larger nose, my nostrils are narrower than Japanese people in general.
