Il numero 20 al mondo italiano infatti ha prima salvato 4 match-point nel secondo set e ha poi rimontato e battuto il tedesco Alexander Zverev, numero 3 del ranking Atp e seconda testa di serie, con il punteggio di 1-6, 7-6 (12-10), 6-0 dopo due ore e 25 minuti. L’azzurro ha infuocato la Bnp Paribas Arena (il secondo campo più importante di Roma), che l’ha spinto poi verso un’epica rimonta.
