Comparatively little rain has fallen since daybreak, and the flood waters have rapidly subsided, though, of course, there is still a considerable volume lying in the lowlands. On every hand scenes of desolation meet the eye. The rivers are carrying enormous quantities of driftwood, dead stock, etc., down to the sea. Fences everywhere have been broken down and properties generally in the
#Taradale area are in a deplorable state. The damage to crops is extensive and complete. Stock losses are very heavy, but it is not possible to get any estimate of the numbers. A good deal of damage has been done to various bridges, many of which are blocked with debris. Pakowhai, between Taradale and Hastings, is still inaccessible from this end. The damage and loss of stock there were very heavy.
