I've been hacking on a personal location tracker for iOS recently. It basically runs in the background and saves places you've been. You can also have it sync with a self hosted server. It's sorta bare bones at the moment but maybe you'll think it's neat: https://github.com/nakajima/WhereWhen

I have devoted the last six months to this project. I am very pleased with the result. I know that there are still many things missing.
