Meeting announcement: 1st Open Sunrise III Science Meeting

Registration is now open for the 1st Open Sunrise III Science meeting. Both in-person and online participation is possible.

This meeting will be held from June 1 – June 3, 2026, at the Institut für Sonnenphysik (KIS), Freiburg, Germany.

https://plan.events.mpg.de/e/sunrise-kis26

Registration deadline: April 15th, 2026

Contact: Andreas Lagg

The meeting will focus on presenting the results from the early science papers, presenting the newly reduced data, which will be publicly released at that time, and providing information on how to access them. Most importantly, everyone will have the opportunity to propose new science projects based on Sunrise III data and on the co-observations recorded by space- and ground-based observatories during the Sunrise III flight. There will be time to discuss these projects with other participants and to form new collaborations.

1st Open Sunrise III Science Meeting: Data Release and Science Projects

During its 6.5-day-long journey through the stratosphere, Sunrise III recorded excellent-quality seeing-free data in the near-UV, visible, and near-IR spectral regions. Almost 2 years after the flight, the first round of scientific papers is close to being submitted. These papers are mainly based on early data reduction levels; by the time of the meeting, fully reduced datasets will be publicly available to the solar community for scientific analysis. The increased data quality in terms of...

A one-and-a-half hour documentary on how an international consortium led by the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research is planning the flight of the most capable solar observatory ever to leave the Earth's surface. Carried by a stratospheric balloon, the observatory Sunrise III is set to fly from Sweden to Canada in the summer of 2022. Free from disturbances of the Earth's atmosphere, under conditions resembling space, it is expected to continuously observe the solar surface with unprecedented precision during its five-day flight. The anticipated dataset will influence astrophysics for decades to come. The film follows the Sunrise III team during the final sixteen months before the flight.

This new children’s book (in 🇩🇪) features 48 beautiful pages filled with cool facts about the Sun! On 2 of them, MPS-scientist Achim Gandorfer and MPS-engineer Bianca Grauf speak about our balloon mission #SunriseIII and tell what they love about our star. Enjoy! #WASISTWAS #TesloffVerlag #Sunrise3

Did you see the reenactment of the Sunrise III flight with a cute little model at the kids' show? https://academiccloud.social/@imprs_solar/114723459947791480 Meanwhile, all our visitors of course also got to see the real Sunrise III observatory up close. Certainly one of the absolute highlights of this #ndwgoe! Did you manage to get a selfie in the mirror?

And then the Sunrise III flight, kids' version! Just look at how absolutely adorable this demonstration turned out to be 🤩 A launch with a bunch of helium balloons (several of them just to be sure!), a short flight, and finally the landing sequence - initiated with professionally applied scissors tonight.

What you see here is not a sci-fi portal - it's the primary mirror of Sunrise III, our stratospheric solar observatory! You can marvel at it live on 21 June at the 6th Night of Science in Göttingen - you rarely get this close to high-tech research. Come along, be amazed, ask us questions - and experience science that inspires!
