Vibrant Vitality

Hoo boy, what a week.

What.

A.

Week.

For those of you who may not know, a little bitty company known as CrowdStrike sent out an update to a small number of computers this past Thursday evening, which caused teeny-tiny, insignificant outage across the globe, rendering that small number of computers unable to start up, forcing IT folk like myself to travel on-foot to each computer to fix, one-by-one.

If it wasn’t apparent, the above paragraph is completely DRIPPING in sarcasm…

Thankfully, we had managed to get just about all of the more critical things back up and running by Tuesday, and things were pretty much business-as-usual Wednesday. Whewwwwwwwww…

I had been meaning to write up a “SiS Bytes” blog post this week, because I hadn’t done one in a hot minute, but alas, life found a way to get in the way of it all. With it being Friday, there wasn’t really a need to write up a separate post when I do this post on Fridays anyway, so why not combine the two?

Life Stuff

Wow, it’s been so long, I can’t even remember what I shared in my last “SiS Bytes” post… 🙃 .. Back in late June, I started doing physcial therapy for my ankle, as my healing had pretty much plateaued. I’ve been going twice a week for the last few weeks, and am now graduating up (down?) to once a week. I’ve noticed a definite improvement in the strength of my ankle and the flexibility, but alas, it’s not fully recovered. I think that because I have partially torn one ligament and completely torn another, that a full recovery simply won’t be possible without surgery. I fully acknowledge that I am not a doctor, and that is merely many years of pessimism speaking. 😂 I would love to be proven wrong.

Book Stuff

Yeah, this has kinda fallen by the wayside, largely thanks to life stuff. I still am determined both to actually do the thing, but also still determined not to pressure myself and impose any kind of deadlines on things. It’s simply to happen naturally and organically. Oddly enough, I was watching a couple of TV episodes last night, and both of them had mentioned writing a book in some form. One was an episode of M*A*S*H, where Radar was taking a correspondence course by mail to improve his vocabulary and become a better author when writing the daily reports for the Army. The other was Frasier, where his father befriends a recluse author who has written one best-selling novel in his lifetime, and carries a manuscript of his yet-unpublished second novel. Is this the universe trying to tell me to ‘do the damn thing’?

Tech Stuff

The SANS Security Awareness summit is NEXT week, and I am soooooo excited for it! Last year’s event in Las Vegas was amazing. I learned so much, and also networked with so many wonderful people. While I’m not directly working in the industry (I still hope to one day, or to incorporate it into my current role), the community at-large is overwhelimingly positive and welcoming, up to and including some of the biggest names in the field. I can’t wait to reconnect with all of them!

The AWS training is still ongoing. It was temporarily put on hold this week thanks to everything, but I’m hoping to get back to it early next week, and finish up the LinkedIn Learning course I’m nearly finished with. There’s a lot of stuff in the AWS pool that I’m rather interested in/fascinated with, so I’m ready to get to it!

Gratitude Stuff

Getting back to the normal flow of these posts, here’s a look at what I was grateful for this week.

Outfit Recap Stuff

Finally, here’s a look back at what I wore to work this week. I did not have the time to take any pictures on Monday and Tuesday, however. I hope you enjoy these, and have a wonderful and safe weekend.

Gratitude List - 7.26.2024

Flickr

Happy Saturday, everyone! For those one or two people who actually follow and/or read this, I didn’t forget to put together a blog post yesterday. Things were just a teensy tiny bit busy yesterday. You see, there was this little inconvenient thing that occurred yesterday that took, oh, one, two, a few hundred-thousand, or maybe a few million of computers down and rendered them out of commission, and unable to start up. Yesterday was spent running around to customers’ computers amongst mass hysteria to touch every computer one-by-one to fix the issue. Unfortunately, this will be the norm for many days to come for people all over the world, as everyone scrambles to bring systems back to life.

Yay.

I will say that I am thankful that it didn’t fully impact our customer base, but it’s closer to about half. Speaking of thankful, here’s my list o’ gratitude for this week:

On the physical therapy front, things took an interesting turn during the day on Monday. I started to develop pains in my hip, on the opposite side of my ankle. On Tuesday, it was so painful that I was limping, and between my hip and my ankle, my body didn’t know which way to limp. 😂

Apparently I was compensating for my injury something fierce on Monday, and my hip simply had enough of it. My therapist was able to help identify and work it out, so now it’s down to a dull roar and an annoyance. I’m still not sure what caused it, and fingers crossed it doesn’t flare up again.

In other news, training has taken a bit of a back seat this week, being involved in all kinds of meetings for the school, and Friday’s debacle didn’t exactly help things. I’m hoping that perhaps I will be able to pick my AWS training back up later in the week, and finish up the last training module, so I can hit some practice tests before scheduling the certification exam. I’ve also got the SANS Security Awareness Summit coming up in about two weeks or so. I’m thankful/sad that it’s not being held in Las Vegas this year like it was last year (boy, Vegas is EXPEN$$$IVE). This year, it’s a bit closer to home. I am SUPER excited to return to the summit again. I made a number of great connections at the event last year, and it will be great to see them again, especially to reconnect with and learn from a couple of leaders in the field, Jessica Barker and Perry Carpenter. The entire event and the security awareness field in general is extremely warm, welcoming, and is comprised of people from all walks of life, and varying careers. Can’t wait! 😁

Finally, let’s take a look back at what I wore to work this week. Wednesday’s look isn’t missing, it’s just that I was working remotely.

Have a great and safe weekend!

Gratitude List - 7.19.2024

Hey there, everyone! Yes, as you may have noticed, this post is coming at you a little bit later than normal. Friday afternoon was a bit chaotic, and simply didn’t have time to put together my weekly post as normal. Sadly, I also didn’t get a chance to catch up on my certification training.

If you hadn’t heard, or don’t follow along with me and my exploits over on LinkedIn, I have recently begun watching some videos on LinkedIn Learning to try and obtain the AWS (Amazon Web Services) Certified Cloud Practitioner certification. Ever since attending the AWS Summit in Washington, D.C. a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been rather fascinated with AWS; what it is, and what it could possibly do to help out things at work, especially within the research areas. The course I’m following along with online is only four modules long, and I’m almost 3/4 of the way through. This particular course and certification is foundational knowledge, so it’s nothing very technical. It’s very high-level, and the instructor (host?) mentions that this particular certification could be obtained with little to no IT knowledge. It’s pretty much a stepping stone to open the doors to all things AWS. I’ve already learned quite a bit, and honestly, I had NO idea how many parts there were to AWS. Who knows where this will lead, but I’m rather excited to learn! Best part? Many of Amazon’s training is F-R-E-E.

Yep, that’s right. Even the in-person stuff. Also, from what I’ve heard, the certification exams aren’t terribly expensive. Sign me up!

That served as a decent lead-in into my weekly gratitude list. Let’s have a look at it, shall we?

Physical therapy continues to be challenging, and in the case of Friday’s session, rather painful. I overdid things a bit the other day. When leaving work one evening, the elevator to the floor where I am was temporarily out of service (I work on the 6th floor), and so I had to take the stairs down to the ground floor. It was bad enough going down ALLLLLLLLL of those stairs, but being the good boy I am (LOL), I also tried to do some of my stretching exercises on the way down, since some of the exercises given to me by the therapist are on the stairs. To make a long story short (too late!), I was hurting a little bit after the trek down, all evening, and into the night. I was limping around a bit the next day, as well as the morning of my PT session. Hopefully I didn’t regress in some of the progress I’ve made thus far. 🤞🏼

Finally, here’s a look back at what I wore to work this week. I hope you enjoy them, and hope you have a wonderful and safe weekend. I’ll be holed up resting my ankle. ☺️

Hey everyone! Welcome to Friday! 🥳

I hope you all had a good week. For me, the week has been relatively low on the chaos meter. The work-world was only slightly burning this week, so I’m counting that as a win. It also helped to have a holiday on Thursday to help break things up, though I do wish we could have also had Friday off as well. Luckily, it was a work-remote day for me, so I’ll take it!

Physical therapy was particularly challenging today. My ankle has been giving me a bit of grief lately, especially when I’m lying down and not even using it. It’s painful to rotate, sometimes popping, which REALLY hurts. The therapist today had me do some different exercises, which hopefully will help in putting my entire weight on that foot, as well as help to give me better balance. I’m about as steady as a house of cards next to a fan when standing on my injured ankle. 🤣 I was actually sweating after leaving today’s session, which I feel like was a very good thing. Overall, I like to think that I’m improving little by little, but because I’m also a pessimist by nature, I feel that I will possibly need surgery as well to fully fix what’s wrong. A bit of an optessimist, then? 😉

This is a decent segue into my gratitude list for this week, as you’ll see why! Check it:

In the work world, things have certainly been gearing up for me. I’m preparing to head to Norfolk, VA next month to attend the SANS Security Awareness summit for the second year in a row, and I am BEYOND excited to attend, and see so many of the people I met last year in Las Vegas. I have another, smaller security conference set in my sights in October for higher education and government institutions in Virginia. Lastly, I’m also working on taking some Amazon (EVERY time I type that, I always put a ‘g’ on the end, and have NO idea why…) AWS training. After attending the free AWS summit hosted by Amazon in DC last week, I’ve been very intrigued and interested in learning more about it, to see whether it is something that we could utilize in the school to assist researchers with storage and computational needs.

I’m also noticing that as I am being exposed to more and more things, my career interests are starting to expand a bit beyond just the cybersecurity awareness/culture realm, and more encompassing into what I feel like is operational in nature. I’m looking to get into more of helping to make decisions and plan for the future, and working with the director and senior leadership, and cybersecurity culture absolutely falls under that umbrella. To use a cybersecurity-related phrase, I’m … expanding in scope. 😉

Okay, enough of that. Here’s a look back at what I wore to work the first three days of the week, since I was off Thursday, and working remotely today. I hope you enjoy them. Have a wonderful weekend!
