I am playing Pokémon gen 1 via a romhack, PureRGB, which is like an enhancement that tries to retain the feel of Gen 1 (whatever that means). Finally, Pokémon Green is tolerable to play!

But anyway I was thinking about the two main characters and how I think Blue is a good rival not because he's a brat but because he's a good foil to Red. Blue is loud, outspoken, brash, bold, and yeah a brat. Red is outgoing in a different way, he is silent, he does things at a moderate pace and whatever he pleases.

And I also think based on how Gen 2 ends, he is not social/antisocial. I think he probably only connects with Pokémon, and this is the real reason he goes out of his way to stop Team Rocket. Think about it; nobody actually tells him to do any of that. No champion is driving him to do so, or pushing him to that path. Obviously you have to beat TR to progress, but narratively, why did he do any of that? Because TR is cruel to Pokémon and he loves Pokémon.

Back to Gen 2, I think that him ending up alone on Mt. Silver is a pretty natural conclusion for someone who doesn't jive that well in human society. Isolated, only his monsters to keep him company, hardly speaks to his own mother. It's cool as a gameplay moment but when I think about it, it's a little sad but understandable. At least he seems to be on good terms with his childhood friend in Gen 7.

(All of this also applies to Leaf, if you so desire.)

I also think Blue's conclusion is fitting. He gets humbled by his rival, and his retrospecting on what happened to Cinnabar Island parallels his short lived championship, I think. Also, he becomes a Gym Leader, which you can consider a mentor of sorts. Showing trainers like who whe was how to become better.

I have made a couple of zines. The first one was Shifting Gardens. It's a zine about body modifications, mainly removals. You can download PDFs for online and printable versions.

I think this tends to be an unpopular thought in the anglosphere Pokémon fandom but I am glad they bother having actual plots in the mainline games. Because otherwise you are playing a slate so blank they may as well be transparent. The player characters genuinely have no identity beyond their designs. As someone who does not self insert into stories the way others do, I need the person I am controlling to have SOMETHING. I do not feel the need to make my own story in a mainline Pokémon game because the protagonist barely exists beyond eye candy. Also, some of the regions are just uninteresting, but that's a different tangent.

I mean, Pokémon Masters EX basically has to make up characters for the protagonists. And like Red only started being an icon or something after being in GSC where we could, I guess, get some hints of him being reclusive? overly dedicated? Whatever makes one climb the top of a mountain and not contact your Mom. It's a fucking joke how the Sun Moon protagonists have a blank smile throughout the entire game. The fact your character emotes in Legends Arceus is revolutionary.

TBH a lot of monster tamers have this issue. You play as Nothing that you're supposed to put yourself into. I feel a disconnect about it, from these games and their fanbases. Uhm... I still like some of them for having interesting bits of worldbuilding, at least. Like Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Alola, they have fun worlds to me. I like what Palworld says about its monsters, and the kind of culture that's formed on the Palpagos Isles. Coromon's plot is, interesting, at least before this rewrite the devs didn't elaborate on. Or there are games that are just fun enough that I can bypass this issue, like Moonstone Island, Monster Rancher 1&2, or maybe Abomination (although this is a bit different as you don't play as one character but rather a rotating group that shifts based on your playthrough and who survives). Telefang 1 is a mix of both of these; having a silly/engaging enough plot/characters/world and game mechanics that make it stand out a little more.

But also some games actually give the character you're playing as, conviction, a "purpose" so to speak. The Dragon Quest Monsters games come to mind. Particularly the last one where you play as the final boss of DQ4, Psaro, and see him grow in power and prestige in the monster world, and I think even change the timeline eventually. Uh, I lost all my progress on that game before I finished it unfortunately. Or there is also Nexomon Extinction which also gives your character a certain backstory that builds on the world and relationships established in the last game. It also characterizes the MC as a weirdo, because the writer is silly.

I can imagine that everything I'm saying is probably alien to other people and, I am not purposefully trying to be contrarian, these are my feelings from my heart put into words to the best of my ability. Please tell me your thoughts too on the way protagonists are utilized in monster tamers, I want to understand you too.

For rom hacks, I have some in progress. Here is what I have started:

Pokémon Odyssey, which finished this year. I don't know anything about its inspirations, but I like the plot so far and the Etrian forms

Pokemon Vega, a fan hack made by Japanese devs, which seems to be rare

Pokémon Grape, an extensive Gen 1 rom hack that seems to be more puzzle-focused (and is also harder to find these days)

The Pit, which is basically TTYD's pit of 100 trials if it were Pokémon

Quarantine Crystal, which is Pokémon Crystal with all Fakemon and altered maps, particularly Kanto

Pokescape, which is based on Runescape. I also know nothing about that, but it's still fun without that knowledge

Explorers of Alpha, which is an "enhancement" mod of PMD EoS but with a lot more features than a standard mainline enhancement hack

Recordkeepers, a rougelite hack that changes up battle mechanics in a unique way (but it is kind of lacking visually)

Pokémon Pisces, which is Hoenn (specifically Gen 3) set 20 years in the future

And some other ones I haven't started/playing a second time:
Fool's Gold
Brown (2014)
Aqua (mysterious hack with no documentation)

The main source of "content creation" for Pokémon I enjoy is...

@johto Johto Times, which talks about fan culture from the early days of Pokémon (1996-2006)

and adef https://www.youtube.com/@adef who uses math concepts to explain/experiment with Pokémon stuff, and also does hypothetical runs where Victory Road/Gym Leaders/Elite Four get through their regions Pokémon League.

Everything else is kind of whatever to me, but I'll take recommendations

As upset and deflated as I am about the modern state of Pokémon, there is always something to talk about with it. I guess it has staying power in that way. There are many facets to dissect and enjoy, even if a lot of it is in the past now.
